...citing ‘local preferences’

Great! Can we get them to omit Washington, DC, Hollywood, Harvard and Gaza? Folks around here might prefer such a map!

The maps of Nairobi, Kenya sold in local bookstores back in the ‘80’s omitted the Eastleigh Air Force Base (now called Moi Air Force Base) located quite near the downtown area.

It was a MILITARY SECRET, don’t you know!

Of course, one could sit at the Thorn Tree restaurant in the center of downtown Nairobi, drinking a cold one and watch the planes landing at that giant blank space on the map.

Here in Georgia, we can have the Confederate States of America on our maps!

I knew a philosophy prof in Virginia who liked to go to "blank spots" on maps for a hobby. He was escorted OUT at least once.

“Local preferences” are not a sound basis for a publication supposedly expounding facts. Harper Collins deals in fiction and therefore is not a useful reference for anything real.

No problem. My local preference is that HarperCollins doesn’t exist either.

I think it was Erick, Red State, Erickson who’s father worked for an oil company I believe in Oman . Related this story while subbing for Rush. When as a youngster went to a company grammar school there. He had gone on a school tour to Greece. Once there while visiting a UN facility his school teacher gave a history lesson and as he pointed to an Israeli flag asked what country is that ? Because their text books didn’t show Israel on their maps.

“The publication of this atlas will confirm Israel’s belief that there exists hostility toward their country from parts of the Arab world.”
