John Thune: We’re not going to shut down Homeland Security in February over executive amnesty

In that case, I have no idea what the point of the “cromnibus” was. Remember that? That was Boehner’s compromise with Obama and Reid on spending that passed last month. It had two parts, one of which would fund the federal government except for Homeland Security through most of next year and the other of which would fund Homeland Security itself only through part of February. That was a concession to conservative anger over O’s executive amnesty. If Obama doesn’t suspend his amnesty before then, the theory went, the new GOP Congress will refuse to pass new funding for DHS next month, forcing a shutdown of (non-essential) personnel in that department and supposedly stopping Obama’s amnesty cold. Now here’s Thune saying that Congress needs to use the power of the purse to rein Obama in … while also insisting that they won’t shut down DHS after all, which I guess means the “cromnibus” was a big fat lie. What power does the purse have if you’re not willing to use it here?

Who is shutting down Homeand Security? They just won’t be allocated any money to work, they will have to work for free.

Thats not a bad deal compared to what the NYPD got from Obama , Sharpton, and DeBlasio....2 dead cops with more to come.Thune is whistling the Obama tune.

These ridiculous “conservative” Republicans today are just Latter-Day Nelson Rockefellerites, or worse.

I thought John Thune was a conservative, but he’s just a RINO. (sigh)

...forcing a shutdown of (non-essential) personnel...

Maybe they'd like to explain why we're paying for non-essential personnel in the first place?

I know we don't pay for those in the oil patch.

In the election, he ran as a conservative. He governs as a RINO.

Oh, no. Any more he is a card-carrying, dyed in the wool, 100% capital 'R' Republican.

The heretics are the ones who don't act like Democrats when they get to DC.

Republican does not equal "conservative", and hasn't for a long time.

Surprise surprise but didn’t they say that this provision was the one that they were going to use to put pressure on the white house? I didn’t believe it then and those who did were willful fools. I haven’t trusted Thune for a long time.

But they can shut down a piece of Homeland Security. They just don’t want to admit that. They’re getting their soundbites in early so they can shape the discussion in their direction.

The solution is simple. Don’t vote for them. Write in a name or stay home. All this was for show. Gohmert knew boner was going to win but he put on a show to make people feel good.

If Trey Gowdy misses a plane and can’t vote which gives the speakership to boner, I’ll “miss a plane” when it comes time to vote in the next election. (Even though I heard he said he was going to vote for boner if he hadn’t missed the plane.)

That was almost worth it though since he came back to beat the loathsome Daschle.

Still, Thune is a disappointment, big time. To his credit he voted against the Gang of Eight bill in 2013 (though one wonders how he’d have voted had his vote been decisive), but to go ahead and preemptively surrender to Obama on his executive amnesty is hugely disappointing.
