No officer can decide to take off on his own. He got the punishment he deserves.
If only he had joined the Taliban, all would be forgiven, with back pay and reinstatement in a cushy post.
This guy was an officer - what he did was much worse. Execute him pour encourager les autres, then let the French give him a full military funeral.
