Ferguson movement drafts its own blueprint
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch ^ | January 3, 2015 | Koran Addo and Elisa Crouch

Local activist DaRius Ali of Operation Help or Hush arrives in Dutchtown to look at apartments for the organization's transitional housing program on Thursday, Dec. 18, 2014. Ali is among a group of protesters living in area motels, preparing to stay in St. Louis long-term by moving into apartments subsidized by the organization.

A group of protesters stormed St. Louis police headquarters on New Year’s Eve, shouting and pushing their way inside, only to be met by a line of aggressive police and pepper spray.

Their plan for a sit-in inside the lobby was one of the boldest actions they’ve taken in five months of protesting, and the act suggested that in 2015 the movement won’t be going away.

The marches, the sit-ins and other demonstrations in the 150 days following the fatal police shooting of Michael Brown, an unarmed black teenager, are the same kinds of actions protesters are planning for the new year.

It’s a playbook that has puzzled many in the St. Louis area who aren’t sure what the protesters are asking for, how long demonstrations will continue, or even who is leading the charge.

That’s because while the protesters are drawing on civil rights movements of the past, they are also drafting their own blueprints.

They’ve engaged in conventional civil disobedience, such as rallies and highway shutdowns. And yet, tools such as Twitter have allowed protest organizers to mobilize quickly with no need of a single leader or a centralized message.

They’ve clashed with establishment civil rights leaders, such as the Rev. Al Sharpton at a recent march in Washington.

Their perspective shows a difference in tactics and generations. While the protesters are of all ages, most are millennials. Many are women.

“We’re the lost generation,” said Kayla Reed, 24....

Has robbing convenience stores become a civil right?

They might be able to do that. I don’t remember any cursive used on blueprints I’ve seen.

“We’re the lost generation,” said Kayla Reed.

If you keep voting for Democrats then you’re going to be lost for the rest of your life

“Ali is among a group of protesters living in area motels, preparing to stay in St. Louis long-term by moving into apartments subsidized by the organization.”

-So long as the “subsidies” are actually paid for with private monies from the group, I could care less. One does wonder, though, if taxpayer money (i.e. subsidized housing, grants for the group, etc.) will come into play.

“A group of protesters stormed St. Louis police headquarters on New Year’s Eve, shouting and pushing their way inside, only to be met by a line of aggressive police and pepper spray.”

-Um, maybe I’m kooky here, but I tend to think that when a mob of screaming people try to force their way into a police precinct (or any other building for that matter), using pepper spray is not aggressive behavior, but a sign of marked restraint.

“Their plan for a sit-in inside the lobby was one of the boldest [and stupidest] actions they’ve taken in five months of protesting...”

-There, fixed it.

“The marches, the sit-ins and other demonstrations in the 150 days following the fatal police shooting of Michael Brown, an unarmed black teenager, are the same kinds of actions protesters are planning for the new year.”

-Which hasn’t changed, and won’t change, the fact that the grand jury findings and the facts of the case both show that the officer in this case acted appropriately.

“It’s a playbook that has puzzled many in the St. Louis area who aren’t sure what the protesters are asking for, how long demonstrations will continue, or even who is leading the charge.”

-Oh, so it’s OWS all over again?

“That’s because while the protesters are drawing on civil rights movements of the past, they are also drafting their own blueprints.”

-Translation: they’re a bunch of boneheads who really don’t have any idea of what they’re doing.

What a bunch of goofballs.

They’re protesting but they don’t know what they want? Ok.

I would also bet the rent money that the police brass and prosecutors have received orders from Washington D.C. on how to act. And I would also bet that the “protestors” are receiving instructions and advice from the Department of Justice on what moves to make. And you can rest assured that tax money is used to support the “protestors”.

Ahh...

My knowledge of Photoshop is only to the extent of adjusting colour levels on images scanned from 135 film. I sometimes work with old film, and the raw image, most of the time, is all right—just needs minor adjustment. But I do know how to perform more involved colour restoration...

It’s just one of my many hobbies...
