he U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention plans to hire a chief of laboratory safety, a new post that has taken on more urgency after a CDC scientist was possibly exposed to Ebola in a laboratory last week.
Creating a new high-level safety position was a key recommendation of a months-long internal investigation into the mishandling of anthrax and bird flu in CDC labs this past summer, according to an internal CDC memo obtained by Reuters.
Those incidents called into question safety practices at more than 1,000 laboratory and support facilities across the CDC's sprawling network of scientists.

Rather than create a new position, shouldn’t they instead just replace the person who is in charge of that job right now?
So the problem is that everyone was just doing everything randomly up to this point?
Everything’s all right now folks. They will have a safety chief.
We were told they were the best before they were caught violating their own protocols repeatedly for years.
But now one safety chief will be the solution to everything effed up in the cdc.
Thank you big govt. Thank you so much.
At what salary?
I guess if the head of the CDC is any indicator, The CDC is too incompetent to follow lab safety rules, so expand the bloated buraeucracy and bring in another level of incompetence.
“hire lab”
Maybe a Labrador would run things better than this crowd of incompetents!

Bring Out Your Dead
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
