Two U.S. Army 'deserters' and two different kinds of justice

If ever there was a U.S. Army deserter who deserved forgiveness, it should be Lt. Lawrence J. Franks, not Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl.

But as a result of politics in the military under President Barack Obama, it is Franks who is going to prison while Bergdahl will most likely be exonerated and awarded some $200,000 in back pay.

At a Rose Garden ceremony in May with Bergdahl's parents present, Obama announced Bergdahl's release by the Taliban. Obama acted as though he just awarded Bergdahl the Medal of Honor. He hugged the parents, and Susan Rice, Obama's national-security advisor, said Bergdahl served "with honor and distinction."

Unfortunately, that just may happen, it will be done quietly...

Worked fine for me. In short:
- 1LT Franks claims to have had suicidal tendencies and couldn’t wait to get into combat.
- Franks’ unit (10th Mtn) wasn’t slated to deploy for a year, so he skipped off and joined the FFL.
- Franks served honorably and with distinction in the FFL and his suicidal tendencies disappeared.
- At the end of his five year enlistment with the FFL, he turned himself in to the US Army in Germany.

This country’s leadership is so disgraceful on so many fronts.

And is leaches down onto all of us, tarnishes us, eats away at our pride of country.

Which is exactly the goal of our coward-in-chief in the first place.

It’s a wonder that Soldiers and Police will go to work anymore. Just who or what exactly do they think they’re fighting for?

The bottom line is we have an enemy of the United States as it’s President. Democrats in all their brilliance decided to put a radical Muslim in the White House, and in time of war against radical Islam no less, which is why he’s done nothing since day one but empower and help spread radical Islam while kicking the legs out from the US at every turn. Now after meeting with Al Sharpton 85 times (yes 85 times) he’s getting cops killed all so he can draw attention away from the fact that he’s been releasing Islamic terrorists from Gitmo prison on a regular basis which is the very first thing he tried to do the second he first took office Jan. 20th 2009. He-is-a-radical-Muslim, an enemy agent. Congress knows this and they refuse to do anything about it. Oh and BTW last year I said Obamacare was a ruse to destroy the economy, that the “fine” for not buying into the scam would triple by 2015. We looky here, now it’s $325 up from $90. This guy is predictable as the sun rising. Everything he does is to destroy.

Retired officer here. The Army did not court martial the wrong person but should court martial them both. An officer can not simply walk away from his troops because he feels bad and may be in a hurry to go to war. He would not stand for his troops doing that and he has to set the example. I’m sorry he is going to prison but better was expected of him.

I'm not retired, but resigned my commission during the Clinton years. For the most part, I agree with you completely. When he took a commission, he not only accepted, but committed himself to the onus of leadership. Assuming at his rank at the time he disappeared he was most likely serving as a platoon leader or company XO, he had a lot of eyes upon him, counting on him to set the example. While he may have seen himself as running to the sound of the guns, his subordinates had no way of knowing that, and probably believed he was running from them...not very inspiring leadership, and the perception of cowardice in a leader is every bit as bad as actual cowardice.

Having said that, the FFL is like a tattoo. Granted, enlistments are in five year blocks, but it's one of those things that if you're in for a penny, you'd better be prepared to be in for a pound. It sounds like he had a promising career as a legionnaire, and would have done best to have made a career out of it.
