Gmail blocked in China

BEIJING Mon Dec 29, 2014 2:52am EST

(Reuters) - Google Inc's Gmail was blocked in China after months of disruptions to the world's biggest email service, with an anti-censorship advocate suggesting the Great Firewall was to blame.

Large numbers of Gmail web addresses were cut off in China on Friday, said GreatFire.org, a China-based freedom of speech advocacy group. Users said the service was still down on Monday.

"I think the government is just trying to further eliminate Google's presence in China and even weaken its market overseas," said a member of GreatFire.org, who uses a pseudonym.

"Imagine if Gmail users might not get through to Chinese clients. Many people outside China might be forced to switch away from Gmail."

More like trying to get everything in house so it's under their control. They are Commies so think, "what would Obama do?".

Good for them. I am happy to see people standing up to Google’s stronghold.

I wouldn’t mind Google if they weren’t political activists.

Good. Zuckerberg is a political activist too. I hope the Chinese copy everything Facebook is doing. They’ve done it to everyone else.

The Alibaba guy basically tweaked eBay a little and became a billionaire. I am sure the same could be done for Facebook and Google.

The Chinese have been copying us for 30+ years. It has really hurt our economy. I don’t care about Google or Facebook and I don’t see it having a significant impact on our economy. The wealth from those companies only impacts a few and, in these cases, a few liberal extremists.

All Internet to/from China and lots of ther places should be blocked. Why make it so easy for them to spam and hack us?

Interesting development. We’ll have to see what the response is.

China allowed Google to operate in China only for a few years.

Only long enough to learn all they could about Google, suck it dry of operational know-how.

Time to ditch the empty husk.

Everyone will now use the Chinese version of Google.

Silly Google will now join the ever-growing list of Western corporations that tried (and failed) to operate a successful business in China...

...and will join the ever-growing list of corporations that have been USED and DUPED by China!
