Thanks for making that point. I just realised that as aware as I like to believe myself, I’ve overlooked that point almost my entire life.
I would add this: The fact that there was no room for them at the inn would seem to imply very clearly that Joseph was ready, willing and able to pay for a room at the inn.
If there was one word that I would use to describe the condition and stature (in human terms) of the Holy Family at the time, it would be: ordinary.
