What if, instead of climbing Mount Sinai to receive the Ten Commandments from God, Moses had turned to the Israelites and asked: Hey, what do you guys think we should do? Considering the Hebrews' bad behavior in the Bible, what with the coveting of neighbors' wives and murdering their own brothers, that might have been a disastrous idea. But in our own more enlightened age, we're perfectly capable of crowdsourcing our own commandments -- or, at least, that's what a new project would have us believe.

Leftists are less likely to keep these than they are to keep the original Ten.
The leftist mindset seems to have only one commandment: No one knows better than you, what is best for others.
Like the evidence that points to Global Warming being a Scam?
2. Strive to understand what is most likely to be true, not to believe what you wish to be true.
Again, the Leftists Belief in Global Warming.
3. The scientific method is the most reliable way of understanding the natural world.
See my Above Points.
6. Be mindful of the consequences of all your actions and recognize that you must take responsibility for them.
Bill DeBlasio needs to have that Tattooed on his Forehead.
7. Treat others as you would want them to treat you, and can reasonably expect them to want to be treated. Think about their perspective.
Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann thank you for your Consideration Libs >:(
8. We have the responsibility to consider others, including future generations.
A Good Anti-Abortion Argument
9. There is no one right way to live.
Unless you can live like Batman, Then Live like Batman.
I can’t really say I have a problem with 80% of the list, except that it is not a list of commandments (i.e. laws). The exceptions are #4—which is a euphemism for saying that women have a right to irresponsibly get pregnant and then kill the kid, and #5—because religious faith has a huge influence on social behaviors that are necessary for civilization to function.
Numbers 1-3 basically say that it is irrational to rigidly hold on to a belief when it is clearly contradicted by facts and evidence. This can apply to anything—for example, the people who hold on to anti-vaccine beliefs, despite the fact that not a shred of evidence condemns vaccines, and mountains of evidence support their central role in individual and public health.
However, #1-3 cannot be commandments, since they do not deal with moral questions.
Numbers 6-8 and 10 are all concepts that are found in the Bible, albeit paraphrased. They also are not commandments, because most of the commandments deal fundamentally with crimes that interfere with the smooth function of society, like murder and theft. Without a legal framework to deal with crime, with the infringement of one person’s rights by another person, those concepts are rather meaningless.
Number 9—well, I have never seen that any two people live exactly the same way. That’s one of those things that is so obvious and fundamental, I have to wonder why someone is trying to elevate it to the status of commandment.
As self claimed logical thinkers, this crowd source methodology is itself a logical fallacy. I.e. everyone is doing it
Well said D’06!
At a lecture years ago by theologian Walter Martin, he observed: There are really only TWO faiths, worship of God of the Holy Bible and worship of self all isms, cults and New Age thinking are all variations of the worship of self.
To that I add all are based on the Serpents seduction in Genesis 3:5: “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” True in the sense we are sovereign souls but we know good and evil only in our own narrow self context whats good for me may not be good for you thus potentially 7 billion little g gods running about, all with possibly different and conflicting goodn evils. War, murder, conquest and slavery throughout history the result of our individual godhood. As sovereign souls (real) God will not violate that sovereignty we must willingly surrender it at the foot of the Cross.
The “rusty” irony... the atheist is the embodiment of Genesis 3:5 a god so limited and small he/she cannot see they are foolish and anti-rational, while they claim the opposite. Sin of pride personified.
#9 - so, if someone chooses to live in total opposition to all the “atheist commandments”, that’s OK too?
The left in general is the embodiment of a life based on the lies that Satan told Eve in Gen 3.
You can’t trust God’s Word, He’s just keeping you from having a good time.
There will be no consequences for your choices.
You can decide right and wrong for yourself.
Maybe they should start with controlling basic grammar first.
Dr. Martin served his Lord well.
1. Be open-minded and be willing to alter your beliefs with new evidence. (Unless the evidence points to an Intelligent Designer, in which case disregard it.)
2. Strive to understand what is most likely to be true, not to believe what you wish to be true. (But see the exception to rule #1.)
3. The scientific method is the most reliable way of understanding the natural world. (But we'll use it to make pronouncements about non-physical realities, from the spiritual to the moral, when it suits us.)
4. Every person has the right to control of their body. (Unless they are Christians, in which case they must put their bodies to work for us; e.g., baking cakes for homosexual unions.)
5. God is not necessary to be a good person or to live a full and meaningful life. (Yeah, this isn't a commandment, but since when have we ever been coinsistant when it didn't suit us?)
6. Be mindful of the consequences of all your actions and recognize that you must take responsibility for them. (We'll ignore that without God, there is no reason why this is would be true--all that matters is what you can get away with in this life.)
7. Treat others as you would want them to treat you, and can reasonably expect them to want to be treated. Think about their perspective. (Unless they're those religious nuts--you should demonize and mock them every chance you get.)
8. We have the responsibility to consider others, including future generations. (Vote the way we tell you to.)
9. There is no one right way to live. (Just all the ways we consider to be wrong.)
10. Leave the world a better place than you found it. (True, this is just repeating #8, but we're running out of things to say and need to end on a sanctimonious note.)
Now, I wonder what the Anthropogenic Global Warming crowd thinks about THAT one?
Not surprisingly, the atheists have basically rediscovered the Natural Law, even going beyond it to include the Golden Rule, which enjoins positive obligations, not just prohibitions.
None of this makes sense without a divine lawmaker, however. Dostoevsky was right. Without God everything is permissible.
the science is “settled”
(1)Do not give opinions or advice unless you are asked.
(2)Do not tell your troubles to others unless you are sure they want to hear them.
(3)When in anothers lair, show him respect or else do not go there.
(4)If a guest in your lair annoys you, treat him cruelly and without mercy.
(5)Do not make sexual advances unless you are given the mating signal.
(6)Do not take that which does not belong to you unless it is a burden to the other person and he cries out to be relieved.
(7)Acknowledge the power of magic if you have employed it successfully to obtain your desires. If you deny the power of magic after having called upon it with success, you will lose all you have obtained.
(8)Do not complain about anything to which you need not subject yourself.
(9)Do not harm little children.
(10)Do not kill non-human animals unless you are attacked or for your food.
(11)When walking in open territory, bother no one. If someone bothers you, ask him to stop. If he does not stop, destroy him.
-— If there is no God, why do they care about any of the things on their list? -—
Peter Kreeft gave the answer in one word: “Sex.”
It’s the part of the Natural Law that restricts their impulses the most. Atheists don’t want to be robbed or murdered. But they don’t want anyone telling them who they can schtup. (Of course, they don’t want anyone cheating on them, but they don’t think that far ahead.)
That’s what it boils down to.
And if you notice, that’s what atheists and modernists get the most bent out of shape about.
