First cougar seen in Kentucky since the Civil War is promptly shot dead
Daily Mail (U.K.) ^ | December 18, 2014 | Josh Gardner

A Fish and Wildlife official near Paris, Kentucky responded to the call about a young male mountain lion in a tree and though it best to 'dispatch it.'

Once native to the state, cougars have not been spotted there since before the Civil War.

An agency spokesman said, 'it seemed to be in very healthy condition' and that shooting it was the proper course of action

An examination of a mountain lion killed by a Kentucky Fish and Wildlife official has found that it was a 125-pound male that appeared to be young and healthy.

People,I have been a lurker here on FR for 15 years at least and have never made a comment or anything else ,perhaps because I am little bit shy, but on the this subject I consider myself an expert . I was born and grew up on Vancouver Island an area with the highest density of mountain lions in North America. In 40 years of hunting and fishing in the wilderness I have had 2 fleeting encounters with mountain lions, in total perhaps 20 seconds exposure , these animals do not want to be seen period. They go out of their way not to be seen . Anybody east of the Mississippi who claims they they have seen a cougar in the wild should buy lottery tickets.

There's some places in Tennessee they could exist and never bee seen. The Cumberland Plateau is one place and several large Wild Life Management Areas and a National Recreation Area. Up on the Tn/KY line they could easily exist and not be seen. Especially around the abandoned strip mines. Cherokee National Forest on the TN/NC line would be a possibility as well. In these areas some it doesn't see mans footprint but maybe once a decade. WMA's and National Forest prohibit running of dogs so it would be ideal.

When Yotes first came into the area you didn't see or hear them either. Now they are seen in cities unfortunately. I chased one in Oak Ridge, Tennessee a couple years ago on a highway close to the weapons plants. It was in front of me on a wall divided four lane hold between 25-30 MPH then jumped the wall into the other lane. The jump was too high for a dog especially running full speed. LOL.

That said I've only seen three Bobcats in my life. One was running in front of my headlights on a road close to where I live. It was the longest I got to see one.

I've also heard a tree full of young hoot Owls sound more like a tree full of monkeys yelling. I called then into a campground that was empty except for my family. Saturday night it was full and the kids said call up the owls. I told them it's too much noise going on but I went to a field a couple hundred feet away and called. The darn things lighted in the trees in the campground. It was hilarious. People were yelling What is that LOL.

You’ll see a hundred black bears before you will see a cougar.

Yeah I agree. Even for someone who hunts and hikes a lot a sighting would probably be a once in a lifetime chance at best. Other animals like Yotes by nature make their presence much more known. An hour or two right at and after sundown or same time window at dawn you can hear them. Also if you see a calf or a deer kill etc with the butt ate up you'll know a Yote is close by.

A Cougar as such is stealth in habits except their kill which in a more remote location will likely rot away before it's ever discovered.

Yes, I have seen a bobcat go bananas on two dogs. A big cat could shred a person in seconds..

Here in SoCal the mountain lions mostly eat mountain bikers.

Cougars, that’s a whole different ballgame.

I understand. One's a GM Chevrolet product, and one's a Ford Mercury product.

I meshed them together without full explanation because they are both muscle cars. Either that, or some other random synaptic firing took place in my brain.

I saw a Cougar with cowl induction and immediately thought: yeah, less than seven mpg and I bought a used '71 SS 396 with cowl induction and an automatic transmission.

Automatic transmission = additional confirmation that I am an idiot.

I'm still not a fan of the cougar's spoiler, but you posted the best cougar on this thread.

There are parts of my county where the elk are so numerous they cause a huge number of automobile accidents. To the point the locals have went to the county government and game warden seeking special hunting outside of season. I have not seen any around my place, but have found their tracks.

I know where that church is located. The pastor from there recently got bit and died handling the snakes. I’ll pass on the snake handling. Wish they would come to my place and hunt for copperheads I would oblige them. Nasty buggers! One year I killed fourteen copperheads, one rattlesnake and two black racers that would not stay away from my mother in laws house.

I have a friend who got nailed by a copperhead getting in a boat a few year back. He flipped a john boat to get the leaves out and righted it back and in the process flipped a two foot copperhead out in the leaves. He took one step and it nailed him in the foot.

He had flip flops on and one fang hit his big toe and the other the narrow strap between the toes thus preventing taking a full load of venom. He was still in the hospital for three days and out of work for two weeks. He says it still hurts on cold winter days when he is working, just throbs in that area.

Ever hear of Wendy Bagwell and his story "Here comes the Rattlesnakes"? LOL

There ain't but two things I know of around here that are Copperheads natural enemies. One is a black shake and the other is a house cat.

If i lived in Kentucky, and if i saw a mountain lion, and if i shot that lion — i bet a wildlife official would screw me six ways to sunday.

Almost certainly. But an official of the state did it instead so that makes it alright. So...history, schmistory.

I wonder if some state wildlife agencies have an obligation to shoot mountain lions if reported and seen in urban or suburban areas. So that when someone says something, like, “We saw a mountain lion over at...!” the rangers just say, “Naw, it was a bobcat. Mountain lions are extinct in this state.” just to save themselves the trouble of officially doing something about it—and to allow them a chance to repopulate.

I’m probably giving them too much credit, though.

Sorry. I've been away an extended period of time. Pacific Northwestern is a distinct regional cuisine. Seafood's a big part of it, including cold water seafood such as salmon and King crab. Claims, including geoduck. Large wild game - moose, elk, caribou. Wild mushrooms and berries, lots of varieties of berries.

It's a real thing.

Over here on the other end, we have much of the same stuff. Substitute Maine Lobster for King Crab, clams, salmon, haddock, scallops. We also have moose, venison, black bear blueberries.

In addition to the regular New England traditional dishes, we also have the mix of Acadian (French Canadian) styles. Some very close (of course) to Cajun.

Seriously, I hope you and your MIL get along, but that is just begging for a good punch line.
