ISIS forced to retreat after suffering casualties during two hour firefight
A number of militants have been killed in Islamic State's very first battle with U.S. ground troops after the extremists attempted to overrun an Iraqi military base.
The militants attacked Ein al-Asad military base on Sunday where more than 100 U.S. military support troops are based.
Despite launching the surprise attack just after midnight, ISIS's offensive was swiftly repelled when U.S. troops and F18 jets joined in the skirmish in support of the Iraqi Army.

Are you crazy! Think about if the base had been overrun. There only 100 troops there = sitting ducks. Imagine the optics. The media can’t report this.
Support troops makes it sound like they’re cooks and window washers. I suspect they’re MOS is a little more deadly.

In VN we ‘hung around’ unofficially from 59-64.
In VN we (officially) fought from 64-75.
Long about 2000 or so they published the revisions that FINALLY credited ‘US’ for really being there in the 59-64 period and gave the ones that were fighting a few fires in areas around VN some ‘credit’ for being there.
In Iraq we had a little skirmish which wiped out the ‘crack troops’ that were going to MOP UP ‘OUR’ guys because they had all that ‘experience’ in the recent war against Iran.
The press was ‘lapping it up’ cause they figured they could claim the Iraqi ‘Republican Guard’ was gonna kick some US ass so the media could drop the Iraqi and Guard and just say ‘Republicans’ kicked US Troops ass.
When the vaunted RG started surrendering to reporters and camera crews the doom and gloomers bout crapped themselves but they could loudly and proudly proclaim that US Troops ‘Kicked the (Iraqi) Republicans (Guard).
10 years later we were ‘at it again’ in a full blown find the WMD caches and there were none (ACTUALLY, if Bush/Cheney etal had known there were NO WMD’s, you can bet your bippie we would have found plenty). So we hung around there and Afghanistan for a few years, SOMEONE said ‘we won’ and we went home.
NOW we are going back to Iraq in an advisory status and, like JFK and LBJ had said ‘NO US TROOPS FIGHTING’, just advising....Also it was LBJ who basically said not ONE American Boys life is worth 1000 VN lives so we ARE NOT going - just prior to us going full tilt.
