Next thing you know, I'll be telling you that the Soviets staged photos for propaganda purposes! I just can't be trusted.

Not only did Goebbels get his propaganda, he gave future military history buffs more footage to put under the microscope. There is a fair amount of information out there on the 'net about those particular stills, complete with with disagreement about the identity of the SS man who is holding the Browning P-35 in at least one photo.

Somehow I don’t think that Kampfgruppe Hansen staged the photos of the murdered Belgians or American POWs.

Of all the Band of Brothers episodes, the Battle of the Bulge seen through the eyes of the combat medic was the one that disturbed me the most.

Somewhere, I read an analysis that said that, when the first day’s objectives weren’t all achieved, there was virtually no chance of the attack’s turning the course of the war.

That's more accurate.

While the movie "Battle of the Bulge" was one of the most awful war movies ever made (solidly in the bottom 5), the one thing I did like about the movie was the "clock" the Germans had to run their operation, and how they were constantly behind schedule.

Other than that, the movie stunk like a wet goat.

Agreed. For its time “Battleground” was a great picture. Who was Khan Noonien Singh? I looked for the name at imdb.com but didn’t see it.

The character played by Ricardo Montalban in a 1960s “Star Trek” episode, and then in a movie, “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.”

Did I mention he was mas macho? I took Spanish all through high school and college, and we often watched documentaries that he had narrated. I could listen to him read the phone book for hours, but listening to him talk about Southwestern folk art was even better.

You got me. I should have searched on the name and not just scanned the entire cast of "Battleground."

As I recall the studio was reluctant to make the movie in 1949, figuring the public was about warred out. It succeeded at the box office nonetheless. It had an air of being made by men who had personal knowledge of service in the war. Little things like the truckload of paratroopers saying with sarcastic relish "you found a hooome in the army".

Speaking of “Kraut tanks”, anybody know how many of those fearsome Tiger II tanks were deployed in this offensive? I read these tanks were brutal but such gas guzzlers that they couldn’t supply them with enough gas.

Star Trek Wrath of Khan was my first date with Mrs. Henkster. I knew then she was the one. Any girl who would go see a Star Trek movie is a keeper.
