Yes, this is happening.
Because the US Army needs a few extra bucks. Thats why. Very soon you will be able to buy a surplus Army-issue Humvee at prices starting around $10,000. Yep, this is the real deal. According to Yahoo News and the Army Times, the US Department of Defense will auction off as many as 4,000 military-spec Humvees, instead of sending them to scrap yards. The first batch of 25 Humvees is heading to the auction block tomorrow.
Obviously these retired vehicles arent in perfect condition, most having been built between 1987 and 1994. They have anywhere from 1,361 to 38,334 miles of military service, carrying everything from troops to equipment. Before any of these Humvees is auctioned, they will be inspected for any significant defects and stripped of any "military characteristics."
That means no body armor or mounted 50 caliber machine guns. Sorry, militia guys. The new owners will be responsible for arranging transportation within three days of the sale, and no titles will be offered. Buyers must also sign documents that explain how they plan to use their new toy. Interested? Go to govplanet.com and place a bid. Hat tip to mdibon.
That’s okay, like their Jeep predecessors they were designed for that. :D
Ok, Prized mutt then :)
“Would rather have an old M151 jeep, but for some reason they quit selling those in the early 80s IIRC.”
Agree. They were fairly peppy as I recall. I’m thinking the reason they were stopped from being sold on the civilian market was due to roll-overs caused by the rear wheels folding under in a hard turn (The rear had independent suspension).
These would look lovely driving into D.C. single file at the next rally on the Mall.
Nothing sez “I have more money than sense” like a Hummer. d;^)
“You just know what a maintenance pig these things are. No thanks.”
Not to mention it is impossible to get new spare parts. The best option would be to buy two of the exact same configuration and use one as a hanger queen.
Tech manuals are probably pretty difficult for civilians to get also.
Anyone who thinks these will be any different are crazy.
This is his Clunkers for Cash program, and one I could probably get behind — if I had $30,000 to fuel it for the next three years.
Monica Lewinsky has been put in charge of this program, since she has previous experience as a government employee familiar with Hummers.
A 20 something year old vehicle, driven by 18-20 year olds in third world countries... what could go wrong?
No thanks, intrusive governemnt.
None of your business.
Not so much. The engine and transmission are out of an 80s-90s GM heavy pickup truck. So are the engine controls and such. A lot of the rest of the vehicle was parts-bin or over the counter stuff.
Tech manuals for HMMWVs have circulated forever. People like using salvaged HMMWV portal axles in their offroad toys.
I want that bumper sticker on my Jeep that says ... “If I wanted a Hummer, I’d call your Sister”
