Fiore claims compliance with IRS over tax liens (Nevada)

CARSON CITY — Las Vegas Republican lawmaker Michele Fiore, a lightning rod in an ongoing Assembly GOP power struggle, said Tuesday she is fully in compliance with the Internal Revenue Service over more than $1 million in tax liens against her home health care businesses.

In her first comments on the controversy, Fiore appeared on the Alan Stock radio show on KDWN in Las Vegas, saying her actual active liens total less than $200,000. Liens dating back to 2003 had previously been resolved, she said.

Fiore said her lien problems stemmed from a dishonest bookkeeper, who she said is facing legal consequences. Fiore said tax liens are common for many business and are not a justification to remove her as chairwoman of the Assembly Taxation Committee.

The IRS has 45 pending liens totaling more than $1 million against Fiore and her companies for unpaid taxes dating back to 2003, according to records reviewed by the Review-Journal.

I don’t know all the details, but if what she is saying is indeed the case with a dishonest bookkeeper, she should be cut some slack as long as she is in the process of making things right. And in this case, it doesn’t look like she waited until she was caught to do so like so many politicians. From the article: “Once we learned what was really going on, my accountant, the IRS and I came up with a fair and workable solution and a payment plan,” she said. “I took full responsibility and I have been in full compliance ever since.”

BTW, I personally know someone in a medical practice whose well trusted and loved bookkeeper managed to embezzle hundreds of thousands of dollars over the course of 10 years. It happens. The money is gone, and my friend is having to pick up the pieces and deal with the mess made by their employee.

I believe Michelle Fiore, one of the few Republicans I voted for since they dropped Pro-Life from their platform in NV.

I think the IRS is a bunch of incompetent scumbag unprosecuted felons, with junk tax software to boot.

You’re aware that the IRS is notorious for foot-dragging and incompetence, aren’t you?

You’re aware that Michele Fiore hasn’t denied owing the back taxes?

That doesn't make the IRS any less a bunch of incompetent scumbag unprosecuted felons, with junk tax software to boot.

It takes them MONTHS to get to your case, and you can't contact anyone who knows anything. I have no doubt Fiore's case is being held in IRS limbo while their "tax analysts" are down in the basement shredding documents, hard drives & Blackberries, when they're not surfing Facebook on the taxpayer's dime. LOL! :)

An IRS lien is not a big deal as long as she making payments on what is owed. The lien is used as a way of making sure the IRS gets its money.

They actually cannot force you to sell your house by the way (a lot of people don't know that).
