BATTLE OF BROKEN HILL (the first act of Islamist terrorism in Australia, 1st January 1915)

n New Year’s Day 1915, two men flying a Turkish flag attacked a picnic train on the outskirts of Broken Hill. A gun battle later took place and both attackers were shot dead. Four other people were killed and seven wounded. Follow the re-enactment of this historic event.

GEORGE NEGUS: G'day. Another week here on GNT. And tonight, a fascinating look back at some of the trickier characters lurking in our national past.

Some of course will have other theories. But maybe our convict past itself could be one of the explanations for our love/hate relationship with our historical villains, our scallywags and larrikins. Maybe that's why the likes of Ned Kelly are such national icons.

But it has to be said there are others among our villains who remain just that - villains. Take for example, the two Turks from Broken Hill who in 1915 went to war with Australians here on our own soil.

I'm a history teacher nowadays. This is a part of Australian history I am strongly discouraged from teaching. I do it anyway - and I get away with it, because all I am teaching is fact.

But this incident is very poorly known even in Australia. I'm posting this link because it's about the best I can find on the web. And I don't think it's a very good one.

Next year, Australia is commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Gallipoli landings. This incident, nearly five months before will probably continue to go unmentioned.

When we were fighting at Gallipoli, we were fighting a war against a gallant enemy. They were Muslims, yes, but they fought with honour as soldiers - and we were invading their country, so it's hard to fault them fighting back. What happened at Broken Hill was not war. It was criminal terrorism.

I remember seeing something about this...I didn't know it was a pivotal moment in Australia's history.

And BTW...I spent a few days in Broken Hill about 30 years ago.It was March and about 40 degrees Celsius...and the flies were so persistent that I came to appreciate the invention of the Aussie salute.

In 1915, IIRC, ‘turkey’ was still under the Ottoman empire, which aligned itself with the Huns. It was because of the first world war, that england gained control over most of the middle and near east, breaking that empire.

Not again...

I own one of these:

and one of these:

I find constant claims by Americans that Australians are disarmed, puzzling to say the least.

does your government know you have them?

if so, they can come get whenever they choose, can they not?

Yes, they do.

Sure. They could also do the same with my car, or my entire house. In theory.

In practice, I live in a country where things like that don't happen so I don't really worry too much.

Things like that have happened in our past and that is why we do worry about it.

Our Constitution is a direct result of the various freedoms the British attempted to remove from us at one time or another.

Yes we have a long memory. I envy you the confidence you have in your leaders. I have none in mine.

And if you happen to find a large amount of 303 British ammo please send it my way LOL

“This is a part of Australian history I am strongly discouraged from teaching”

The statement “Kiss my a**. Fire me.” springs unbidden into my mind.

You have excellent taste in firearms. If I didn’t already own an M1A I’d have an FN model of one sort or another.

Best,

L

Our Constitution is a direct result of the various freedoms the British attempted to remove from us at one time or another.

Yes, I know - but from our perspective here, Britain learned from that - and for Australians, the Crown has been a primary protector of our liberties against tyrannical governments for over a century and a half. We have had attempts by governments - three major ones in my view - by governments to try and get around our basic rights and constitution - and in each case, the Crown has stepped in to correct what was happening. In the 1850s, in my own state (then a Colony), people stood up for some of the same rights Americans had - no taxation without representation being one of them. In that case, there was a single small battle - the closest thing we've ever had to a civil war here. And at the point the Crown stepped in, and the people got representation - self government by an elected Parliament (the leader of the rebellion was one of the first men elected as eventually wound up at its Speaker for seven years) within a year. It's a very different history and a large part of the difference is because America taught the British government that you couldn't get away with what they tried to do in America. It was a battle they couldn't win.

We benefited from what America did. It changed more than just the US. It changed what being part of the British Empire meant as well - at least for places where most people were white - it took another century for the idea of self rule and rights to permeate into the 'native' colonies.

It’s what they trained me to use in the Navy. For me guns are primarily a tool - and the best tool is the one you know how to use best. So that’s what I got.

My handgun on the other hand, was more a matter of what was readily available at the time I wanted to purchase one - Australian gun shops often have a pretty limited range of handguns. I’ve learned to use it - but it was not as much of a choice as the SLR.

thank you for this information naturalman1975. I would never have known any of this but for your post.

Unfortunately, the left we have to deal with today in the US is still, in many respects, the revolutionary types who simply want to destroy everything.

Thanks again,
