Uninsured motorists task force formed

ST. PAUL — (AP) State legislators are working on ways to better identify Minnesota residents who drive without auto insurance. Motorists don't have to show proof of insurance when renewing a vehicle's registration. People who drive without insurance can lose their licenses and be fined about $300. The state has a law mandating insurance but doesn't have a meaningful verification system, said Sen. Susan Kent, who heads the uninsured motorist task force that is expected to come up with recommendations by Feb. 1. The committee has explored options ranging from increasing fines to seizing license plates of uninsured drivers. "There's a real sort of continuum of how strong we want to be in these enforcement mechanisms and how hard we want to pursue people to prove their insurance," Kent said. The insurance industry estimates 10 to 20 percent of Minnesotans drive without insurance, Minnesota Public Radio reported. And those uninsured motorists drive up premium costs for insured drivers.

The farther away from the tallest buildings you get, the more sense the people have.

Insurance companies will be sure to be there to lobby for the state to give illegals driver’s licenses.

Anything for an buck, no matter how unlikley that buck being paid is.Obamacare comes to mind.

In Tennessee we have uninsured motorist coverage. If they have no insurance, your insuror pays and then goes after the other party.

They have no mercy. My wife got hit, the offending party didn’t pay and then later called her and bitterly complained and whined because not only did the insurance company make her life miserable they added charges for costs of collection.

I know that in New York State, which I fled in 1980, they now impound your car when your state-controlled insurance agency notifies them that you haven’t paid. Seriously. They tow it away and lock it up.

Of course, not if you are an illegal alien.

New Hampshire requires insurance or a bond. Maine requires neither.

Live free or die.

Car insurance is a civil right!

The reason some can't afford is because of white privilege!

I don’t know why the state couldn’t just verify with an agent via phone or internet that the registrar has a legit PAID policy or require a notarized letter from the agent as proof.( I’m assuming all agents are license with the state.)

It used to be in Minnesota that if you didn’t pay your insurance, your insurance company notified the state and the state would verify it was paid or not and send you a revocation notice.

I’m sure some democrat found that practice racist and made it stop.
