Apple's discontinued iPod Classic fetching mega-bucks as hot Christmas gift

Apple made billions giving people what they want, but the tech giant might want to rethink its decision to kill off the iPod Classic music player, now that it has become one of the hottest Christmas presents of the year.

People are clamoring for used models on eBay, according to the UK newspaper The Guardian. The 16-gigabyte digital music player, which a decade ago helped Apple revolutionize the music industry, can hold up to 40,000 songs, more than double the amount of any iPods currently being manufactured.

More than 3,000 have been sold on eBay since the Classic was retired in October, fetching prices as high as $400 in a boomlet foretold by Stuff magazine editor Will Dunn more than a year ago.

The Classic’s demise was telegraphed well in advance, with Apple CEO Tim Cook saying it would be discontinued because the company no longer has access to the components and a redesign using other parts was impractical. Another reason the company lost interest in the device is that more people are using their smartphones to hold songs, even though phones can’t match the iPod Classic’s storage capacity.

I’ve got one in a drawer somewhere. I should dig it out.

I still use my classic iPod, I don’t like coupling music with a phone. Saves the battery.

I wish they would not discontinue the iPod.

Howver, I do have the first generation “touch” which I never used.

I like my iPod classic so much I want to have it surgically implanted. I’m listening to my 16+ hour Christmas playlist on it right now.

Seriously, how much did Apple miss it with this decision?

I love having 160 gigs of music with me at all times. No phone can do that.

My iPod 5th generation won’t die. I’ve had it for 10 years now. I even bought a replacement battery for it, but haven’t needed it.

I’m sorry. I still like vinyl. Digital music has no soul.

So you carry your record player everywhere you go?

Someone's not making any sense. That would be only 25 seconds per song at 128 kbps. Maybe that's a typo for the 160 gigabyte for Apple's biggest iPod which would handle 40000 4-minute songs.

I bought 3 iPod 160 Gig's just as they discontinued them. Still have a 2nd Gen 60 Gig hanging around too (won't hold all ~17900 songs I have though).

This was Apple's "New Coke" fiasco moment.

Hope they re-lent and bring back the "Classic" someday. I can't believe that Apple doesn't have access to the parts or couldn't just farm out the work to someone else besides the Chinese.

FReegards!

It's not access to parts, per se. Apple is abandoning platter drives for solid-state across the board, with the iPod Classic being one of the last holdouts. (Large internal hard drives still exist for Mac and Mac Mini models, but those are being phased out with SSD/platter fusion drives or just larger SSDs.)

I got one in a drawer that I got as a gift that’s never been used. I’d gladly trade it for an iPhone 6 plus.

As for resale... I’ve got a 15 GB white 3rd-gen (pre-”classic” designation) and my wife’s old 30 GB black 4th-gen (ditto) laying around. Both functional, but could sorely use battery replacement and have visible signs of being used.

No. I have an iPod and iPhone.

But it is just background sound. Not musical.
