Under Gov. Scott Walker's leadership and the Republican control of Wisconsin's Legislature, Planned Parenthood has weathered a focused effort to diminish its role within the state. But through the sustained battle, the women's health organization has found silver linings.
"I think since we’ve been so shut out of state government we have had an opportunity to build stronger local relationships," said Nicole Safar, public policy director for Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin.
Dane County is a prime example of a place where Planned Parenthood works closely with local government to provide sex education and other programming. The local partnership "doesn't make up for losing $1 million every year in state funding," but Safar said it's great to have an opportunity to move issues forward locally in places like Madison, Milwaukee, Oshkosh and Appleton.
However, Safar said, that silver lining is the upside to four years of "real hardship" for access to women's health care in Wisconsin.
Five Planned Parenthood clinics have shut their doors since Walker took office, the result of his decision to eliminate family planning dollars from the state budget.

Cutting them anywhere helps cut them everywhere. Reducing the number of women who have abortions reduces the number who have to justify it to themselves for the rest of their lives.

These eco-fascists who agitate for lightbulb bans are purse-carrying, mascara-wearing, femi-Nazi-castrated wimps. They pee in their pants and scream like little girls anytime you confront them in a dark parking lot.
The GOPe are an embarrassment. General Washington would have shipped these worms to the rear to clean outhouses and scrape horsesh*t from the bottom of soldier’s boots.
