Two years ago in February, a 59-year-old federal inmate went under the knife at St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton to have his diseased left kidney removed.
He emerged from the procedure with his tumor-laden kidney still intact. The surgeon, Dr. Charles Coonan Streit, a urologist who has had his license for 41 years, mistakenly had taken out his healthy right kidney.
Last week, the California Medical Board disciplined Streit for the error, placing him on probation for three years.
According to the medical board, on the day of the operation Streit relied on memory to decide which kidney to remove because he didnt have access to the patients complete medical records. And the paperwork Streit did have was incorrect: It showed the patient was admitted to St. Jude with a cancerous right kidney, according to the California Department of Public Health.

I HATE when that happens!
Not his fault the patient was wheeled in the wrong way around ,just send him back to Cuba for more training
LMAO!
I wonder who has the good kidney and how much he or she paid for it?
Divine providence, or vigilante doctor?
You can’t sell a diseased kidney on the black market. Always remove the good one.
This is an area where zero tolerance should be the rule. Whoever made the mistake on the paperwork should never be allowed near a medical facility again. And the doctor, same thing.
The surgeon should “donate” one of his, if he’s a match. If not, someone else that is could use it.
I though the operating room staff “mark” which side the body or area the doctor needs work on...
I’ve been under the knife three times and every time I was asked by a nurse if the area being operated on was correct...
Hard to believe this stuff happens....
One of my associates did something like this. He took off the wrong breast. The check was very large. Yes. there should be zero tolerance for this. I am sure the doctors were intent of doing the right job, but due diligence!!! One cannot make this kind of error.
"Eeeny Meeny Miney Mo....."
My right or your right?
Sounds like delayed voluntary manslaughter to me.
He should rot in jail.
.
“The mistake put his future renal function in jeopardy”
That’s a bit of understatement, one kidney and you can have pretty good renal function, no kidneys. I suspect dialysis would be inconvenient.
” Streit relied on memory to decide which kidney to remove”
Yep. Never fails!
I have always had discussions with as many of the staff as possible about what they were going to do with me. Once they came to get me for a surgery and i asked them if they knew who I was, she laughed it off and said Mr. Smith, my wife told her I wasn’t going anywhere until she could tell me who I was. This was years ago, now they always make me tell them who I am and I tell them it’s more important for them to know who I am. I don’t go until I’m satasfied they know who I am and what they’re supposed be doing to what side if applicable.
Measure twice, cut once!
Makes sense. From now on I’ll remember to take a grease pencil and make notes for the surgeon:
“My name is Pete from Shawnee Mission!”
“Not this leg!!”
“The other testicle!”
“Gall bladder, not Sex Change!”
