Wow...so many familiar names on that thread. I feel it’s like a novel I need to reread. I’m “stunned” sometimes when I read a thread, click on an “old FRiend name” and see they haven’t posted. For years.
I remember Rathergate...and YOUR POSTS Mr. Nerks and Buckhead et al.
I would say I need to get a hobby, but this place seems to be it.
Bump
I’m still looking for a hobby myself. My GP tells me I need to get away from the computer. It’s threads like this that remind me how long I’ve been sitting on my backside.
Growing flowers?
I’m thinking about art classes, then I can paint flowers.
I was quite new to FR as well. I witnessed the whole unfolding of the event on FR and it is still one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. The collective teamwork here was incredible!
Dan Rather was brought down by his hubris and liberal hatred of President GW Bush. He got what he deserved IMHO.
Nice art!
I highly recommend art. I’m edging closer to that myself. I’ve dallied in various mediums before but never dove in for long periods of time. Now is the right time, before I lose eyesight or hand/eye coordination. I have a LOT of ideas.
When I get into doing any sort of artwork, time and practically everything in the world just disappears. I need that...
You're not alone with that, when I start, there's no breakfast lunch nor dinner.
I hope to start with the flowers of the fields I remember from my childhood, when the dandylion came to my knees and the daisies were as tall as I was.
You had huge dandelions and daisies when you were a child, too! I had field grass that was as tall as I was and we would make tunnels and caves in it.
I didn’t know what cities were...
I used to lie on the grass, look at the sky and feel as though I had to hold on to the grass to keep from falling into the sky.
I’d still feel like that if I could find a field to lie down in.
I like colored pencils, pen and ink and used to like oils and then acrylics but now my health won’t permit the oils and acrylics. I was going to try water colors but got scared, always been scared of them. So I got those colored pencils you can wash over with a wet brush.
I read that you are looking for a hobby: There’s a hobby for you!
The koryu ( old traditional) Soegetsu school has a genuine lineage that really has a lot of “power.” ( One does not create flower arrangements, one uses objects to define space and the quality of time, working with the 5 elements of earth, air, water, fire and space). Then that generalizes iteself into one’s life.

Some people make money at it:
...thank you so much for the comprehensive information, it sure looks like a hobby that might be both creative and good for the soul...

Once you have the basic stuff ( shears, flower weights ( weighted frogs), and a flat ikebana display bowl)all one has to do is walk down a road or trail and you have all you need to create. :-)
