Holding the reins of two horses with one hand, Austin Police Sgt. Adam Johnson raised his service pistol and fired a bullseye into the target some 312 feet away.
Down went Larry McQuilliams, and so ended his rampage through the streets of the Texas capital, where hed fired more than 100 rounds from his AK-47 and .22-caliber rifles at buildings. The shot, from Johnsons Smith & Wesson M&P .40 pistol, hit McQuilliams square in the chest and made the 15-year-veteran the toast of gun enthusiasts around the country.
At a minimum, it was extraordinary shot, said Army Maj. John Plaster, a retired Special Forces operator, long-range shooting expert and author of The Ultimate Sniper: An Advanced Training Manual for Military and Police Snipers.
It was not immediately clear if Johnsons center-mass shot killed McQuilliams, or if the longtime criminal died from a self-inflicted shot a moment later. Results from an autopsy are pending, but theres no disputing the improbably accurate bullet fired by Johnson brought a safe end to the Nov. 28 incident.

Even shooting prone with a two hand grip at 100 yds with a handgun is one heckufva shot.
I’ve got a Ruger SS 44 mag 10 1/2 in barrel that will do it some of the time.
That should be Blackhawk.
Used to shoot beer cans at 100 yards with a K38.Used to drive my brother crazy,I’d make more hits with the S&W than he would shooting his rifle.
The Maximum Effective range of a S&W M&P (military and police) .40 cal, is 55 yards. 165 feet.
Yeah, I guess Sgt Johnson didn’t know that. ;-)
This is a little off topic, but since he was able to manage two full grown horses at once, I presume all police horses are trained to stay calm at the sounds of gunfire. Good work, all around.

Where the Hell did you get that??
“He’s both a very good shot and lucky. “
Fortunate for us.
Reminds me of this one when I lived in Austin.

Better way to take ‘em down is both a shotgun and empty a pistol.
the perp is presumed to be in the process of being “funeralized”.
Commenting today on protests in DC, Notso Sharpton said in respect for Marion Barry, protests would be cancelled while the former mayor was “funeralized”. No word if dry cleaners were offering attendees a special rate on having their suits “martinized”.
Jeff Cooper and Elmer Keith had their front sights modified with a gold line across the face sight. Line up this gold bar with the back sight, the target on top of the front sight and they could hit almost anything at 100 yards(300ft).
I do the same with an auto pistol I have. I line up the base of the front sight with the top of rear sight, place the target on top of the front sight and can hit it at 25 yards. Using the sights normally makes the hit very low.
Hmmm...
2:33am,
dark,
glare of street lights,
horse reins in hand,
single perp (presumably alone at that hour) with audible reports and presumably visible muzzle flashes
football-field + away
single-handed
5” drop...
...eyesight is right. Damned good shot, but I give it 60/40 Skill/Luck in this case.
There’s no question in my mind what his reaction was upon regaining composure after the horses reacted to his shot and he saw the perp drop as he was trying to line up for another shot.
I’m not going to armchair-quarterback his decision to shoot...not enough info.
Thank you tx_eggman for clarifying that for poster. ..sad American.....living up to that handle.

I just channeled the Lone Ranger and he said his impression of you only equals your own...Truly remarkable shooting.
Adjusted point of aim skills are an acquired skill indeed . Its goal is, if all you have is a sidearm you can, and i do on a regular basis in training, make 300 yard plus shots to H & I a shooter so you can move to cover or give time to others to do such an evade a kill zone.
Of course hits are minute of dumpster accurate at that range but at the range this officer engaged the shooter a hold on the killers left shoulder would have made a center mass torso hit at 312 feet...just under a hundred yards.
Adjusted point of aim .....is close to artillery at ranges I speak of but try it. Find a place with a large canyon back drop, shoot yer pistol about 80 yards at the two o’clock position above and beyond your target..... walk the rounds in as you “adjust your point of aim “ accordingly....... Ive seen me do it...:o)
Stay safe ....
Ping for later
