Teacher charged in sex assault on Manchester Regional student was hired substitute

A substitute teacher who was charged with sexually assaulting a 16-year-old Manchester Regional High School student Thursday, was only hired to teach on an as-needed basis for an absent science teacher during the 2014-15 school year, the principal said.

Linda Hardan of Prospect Park, 21, was arrested Friday for allegedly taking the teenager to a location in Wayne outside of school hours and sexually assaulting him, according to a senior Passaic County assistant prosecutor.

The high school serves students from Haledon, North Haledon and Prospect Park. Hardan was on a list of eligible substitute teachers kept by the Passaic County Educational Services Commission, said Dr. Richard Ney, the school’s principal. The commission is a public agency that provides services, such as assigning substitute teachers, after-school programs and transportation, according to its website. Commission administrators could not be reached for comment on Monday.

Substitute teachers earn $100 per day and are hired on an as-needed basis, Ney said. They must have earned at least two years’ of college credits, he said.

Hardan, who had attended Manchester Regional herself, is charged with sexual assault, endangering the welfare of a child and criminal sexual contact. She was being held Monday in Passaic County Jail in lieu of $250,000 bail, jail records show. Hardan faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted on the charge of sexual assault, up to five on the charge of endangering the welfare of a child and up to 18 months on the charge of criminal sexual contact, authorities said.
