A 2014 South African Reconciliation Barometer released today revealed that Whites are less likely to remember the oppressive nature of apartheid than other citizens.
According to the report, 53 percent of whites who took part in the survey agreed with the statement that apartheid was a crime against humanity.
This was compared to 80 percent of blacks, 77 percent of Indians, and 70 percent of coloured citizens who agreed with the statement.
Whites were half as likely as black South Africans to agree with redressing the injustice of the past.
The barometer looked at 10 years of data collected between 2003 and 2013.
It found that in 2003, 86.5% of South Africans agreed that apartheid was an inhumane crime compared to 76.4% today.
The report stated that remembering the oppressive nature of apartheid encouraged citizens to be aware of its legacy and allow for transformation, rather than reproducing unequal relationships.
The barometer's project leader Kim Wale said that there is a real need to engage white South Africans on what their whiteness meant in relation to the experiences of other races.

Why shouldn’t they?
SA existed as an economic powerhouse for 80 years once they’d brought those pesky Boers to heel.
Now the 60-70’s; OH we’re supposed to feel guilty now. The Professional Communist comes on the scene and its all tribal and racial and the people who clawed out an actual business are now the bad guy (whether or not we clothed, educated, fed, or brought their whole culture out of darkness into light does not matter).

It is more complicated than that; the Dutch settlers of much of South Africa settled there because the land wasn’t populated. Years later, people migrating down the southwest coast of Africa were entering their lands; the Dutch had to deal with them. It wasn’t slavery.
Not a defense of apartheid; just a clarification.

I know it wasn't slavery. They should have maintained their borders and evicted the migrants. We're encountering a similar situation with migrants from Latin America. A majority helot society will eventually be run by the helots. In ancient Greece, the helots were at least physically indistinguishable from the aristos (thereby making the identification of targets for revenge a little more difficult just from a casual look) and lacked this ideology that the aristos were the root of their problems for the rest of eternity.
And Indian.
The Boers were a mainly agricultural people; protecting their borders was probably impossible.
