When I look at a map of Russia just on a precursory basis, they could let Chechny and Dagestan secede and it doesn’t seem like it would be a big deal. Chechnya has always been a restive thorn in the side of the Russians. During WW II Stalin deported the entire Chechan population to Siberia on the pretext that they were collaborating with the Nazis. The hatred is mutual and the Chechans do not need an excuse to launch insurgent attacks on the Russians whom they see as occupiers.

A while back, there was a leak about the Saudis offering to stop sending money and arms to the Chechens if Russia cut off support for Assad. Since Russia continues to arm Assad, the Saudis have kept up their support for Chechen fighters.
