I like Ben Stein as a writer and entertainer. I generally agree with him. But this essay reeks of Crazyland thinking. He is menaced by a man who apparently could kill him and was on the verge of doing so. Does California allow him to carry a firearm for protection? Of course not. He has to hide his car from this violent gent and "hope his car doesn't get keyed.:

At home he gets a bill from his (grown) son who he is supporting, along with the son's family. WTF? His wife adds to his son's bills by also piling-up charges to animal charities "in the tens of thousands of dollars a month." Ben's response? He is so ashamed of being angry -- will Wifey ever forgive him?

But as he says, "It's all my fault." Pitiful.

I thought the same thing when I read it. Diary of a Whipped Man.

He’s creating this world as well as living in it. Better him than me.

It is one’s own fault, allowing oneself to be used. I spend my days doing things for my husband and children that they can and should do for themselves ... but that’s the choice I make.

I had assumed Ben Stein’s son and family in Greensboro had a job or something, silly me. At least my one child away from home is self-supporting in general, although we buy her some dishes or a car part now and then.

I also assume he actually has enough money for all of this, and if they “end up broke,” when he’s dead, oh well.

Sounds like Ben needs to grow a pair and give his family some tough love and cut the purse strings.

At some point I would’ve said “Okay, I tried to be nice, but you don’t seem receptive to that so how’s about you go screw yourself, ya sassenach bastard!”
Very loudly (in my head, to myself). I likely would just watch him until he left. Unstable people are unpredictable. You don’t know what he’s going to do next and guess what? neither does he!

Dear Ben Stein, I hear you crying and I want to help you.

I am thinking of buying a new Porsche 911 or even better, a Porsche 918 Spyder. Send me the money I need and I promise to send you photos of me driving it and having a ball.

Each week, you can show the new photos to your wife. It will make her cry and feel bad about what her reckless spending has done to you. Soon, she will stop all the wasteful spending and in just a few months, you will have more money that you know what to do with.

I won’t charge a fee for this service, Ben. It’s enough for me just to know that I played an important part in making you and your wife happy again.

I am leaning towards red.... that color makes me feel 19 again.

Sincerely — Your new best friend,

Dan

p.s. If she starts this nonsense up again, I am thinking of a large sailboat for next year.

I’d say he shouldn’t have honked his horn and then apologized. If you don’t have the balls to stand up for your actions then you should just shut up!

I was very glad that I was not armed because I could imagine the temptation to shoot when scared.

Holy crap. I've been in a few confrontations and it never occurred to me to draw my weapon.
This sounds more like the lib view of gun bearers.
I will say if a group started threatening me it would occur very quickly.

He scared me and I thought for a moment of calling 911. I think it’s illegal to start screaming provocative words at someone out of the blue. Maybe I saw that on COPS. I was very glad that I was not armed because I could imagine the temptation to shoot when scared.

Wow, call 911, kill the man? Another weirdo that should never have a gun.

No wonder Governor Palin scared him so much.

Very strange.

What’s wrong with the picture is he’s a wimp and should never have said a word to the guy much less argue with him after seeing he was an angry drunk. Common sense, man.

You should have read the piece he wrote years ago, involving this same son, who was a teenager at the time. And a typical, disobedient, teen. It involved the beach house in Malibu and a lot of other high-end Cali-specific problems.

I don’t remember if this was before the internet or not, but the responses, whether they were immediate or delayed due to dead tree publication were brutal.

Well, now... so much wrong with this.

Frankly, I never talk about my ‘special’ interactions with such people...but the logic applies to Ben’s neutered interaction, too.

Get a clue, Ben.
