I used to frequent a website where the filter blocked “Nigerian,” because of its resemblance to “nigger.”
And yes, I did just type the dreaded “n-word,” as I referred to it in a neutral context. I think all sensible adults should.
I remember the “niggardly” scandal.
It meant parsimonious, stingy, miserly and did not even derive from the Latin “niger” (black) but a Scandinavian root “hneggar.”
Didn’t matter, “folk etymology” seized the day.
