I remember the “niggardly” scandal.
It meant parsimonious, stingy, miserly and did not even derive from the Latin “niger” (black) but a Scandinavian root “hneggar.”
Didn’t matter, “folk etymology” seized the day.
It seems like there was a fuss about “negate” at some point, too.
