Muhammed NOT most popular boys name in Britain
The Guardian ^ | 1st December 2014 | George Arnett

'It’s a popular myth, and there’s good reason for it, that Muhammad is Britain’s most popular boy’s name.

Except that is apparently what the data presented by the website BabyCentre has revealed this morning. These numbers were widely reported, including by the Guardian (we have subsequently updated our news story to make clear that it is a survey and not official national statistics).

The BabyCentre.co.uk names are simply a sample based on 56,157 members of the site who gave birth in 2014. Reporting on this seems to have overlooked that there are comprehensive statistics available from official bodies, although only up to 2013. Those figures show Muhammad was the 15th most popular boys name in England and Wales and the 52nd most popular in Scotland.

The names chosen by a self-selecting group of parents will probably show more about the demographics of the users of that site than the overall trends.'

"True, its originally Danish/German."

What a coincidence! I'm part Mongolian, too (re. Huns)!

[But then aren't we all. Little humor there.]

I apologize. I wasn’t saying YOU were idiotic. I was referring to the original author.

You can do this with any name. Renders this whole hysteria a nonsense. The day any actual variant becomes no 1 on its own, then I will worry.

I doubt its even the most in Lonodn, why do Americans think Muslims are the biggest ethnic group in London and the UK?.

Scotland has 1% Muslims, all its means is that Scottish Muslims have less variety than I thought they did. Scotland’s Muslim pop remains the same.

Choudray is a nutter who gets more ‘cred’ from you lot than us, you seem to think he is a serious force in the UK, when in fact he is a nutcase we laugh at with a small devoted following.

Ahmed is a loudmouth who of course never followed through.

Sharia courts exist in five English cities and is a CIVIL court. BTW, I opposed it.

Only by inc every last variant, which you can do with any name. All this proves is that UK Muslim parents aren’t a very inventive lot.

That warning is applicable to every country in the West, particularly the US.

If the US goes, the rest of the West is toast, and the muzzies know it.

Mehmet is the Turkish version of the name Mohammed/Muhammad. I believe Mahmoud is an entirely different name.

There is a town called Mahomet in Illinois, but I've been told it is an American Indian name in origin ("Mahomet" used to be a common spelling in English for the name of the founder of Islam).

It’s always been a misleading stat because Muslims name their sons Mohammed in far greater numbers than non Muslims name their kids any other name. If all Christian Brits named their sons John...

Precisely. That's the essential point which nearly all who comment on this topic miss. Most branches of Islam require their adherents to name their firstborn son after their Prophet, whereas non-muslims have a vast array of names to choose from. That will always skew the statistics: which will thus always give the impression, unless that weighting is discounted, that Muslim parenthood is more prominent than is in fact the case.

The FACTS have been published by the Office of National Statistics. In order of popularity, the names given to male babies, in England and Wales, in 2013, are as follows:

1. Oliver; 2. Jack; 3. Harry; 4. Jacob; 5. Charlie; 6. Thomas; 7. Oscar; 8. William; 9. James; 10. George.

As you can see from the above list, far from being the top, Mohammed doesn’t even make the top ten.
