Prince Charles's coronation should include a reading from the Koran, a Church of England Bishop has said. Lord Harries of Pentregarth, a retired Bishop of Oxford, said that such a gesture at the traditionally Anglican service would be "creative" and make Muslims feel "embraced" by the nation.
Speaking in the House of Lords yesterday, the retired bishop, who continues to serve as an assistant in the Anglican diocese of Southwark, said that the Church of England should be "exercising its historic position in a hospitable way."
Speaking of a civic service held at Bristol Cathedral last year, he said that authorities had agreed that a passage from the Koran should be read out before the Christian service started. "It was a brilliant creative act of accommodation that made the Muslim high sheriff feel, as she said, warmly embraced but did not alienate the core congregation," he said.
"That principle of hospitality can and should be reflected in many public ceremonies, including the next coronation service."

Um, No.

I keep waiting for someone or some group to take action against these nut-jobs. But alas, this planet appears to be doomed to failure.
Meanwhile, Europe needs to gather 'round a conference table and cobble together a final solution to the Mooselimb Question.
It is and it won’t happen.
There have been minor changes to the Order of the Coronation but no major change has been made since 1307 and even that was not that much different from the order of 896. It’s a Sacrament of the Church of England, and was a Sacrament of the Roman Catholic Church before that. No text from another faith will be incorporated into it. The Synod would not tolerate it. The majority of Anglicans would not tolerate it. And neither the Queen, nor the Prince of Wales, would tolerate it either.
Lord Harries likes spouting off.
I’ll defer to your superior knowledge of British history and custom. And I hope and pray you are correct.
I cannot help but be dismayed, however at the apparent desire that Britain has to clutch this asp to her breast.
One more reason why I pray for the Queen’s continued good health
There are very good reasons why I have left the Church of England.
Clerics like Lord Harries are one of those very good reasons.
Unfortunately, while he can’t touch the Order of Coronation even if he wants to, there’s a lot of other stuff he could touch and did.
It’s not often I refer to a clergyman as asshole
No.
Wow! The fish & chip eating surrender monkeys.
Only if I get his brand new leather jacket and brand new Vodafone.
It was nice while it lasted.
This is truly mindnumbing...
They used to be the baddest of the bad not so long ago. WTH happened?
I hope you are right. It’s a measure of how things have changed that, for the 1953 Coronation the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland was given a very minor role, there was considerable controversy. Now I’m just hoping most of the old ceremony survives.
