Sen. Mike Enzi confirmed Wednesday that he wants to be the next chairman of the Senate Budget Committee and is in negotiations to supplant the panel's current ranking member, Sen. Jeff Sessions.
Enzi, of Wyoming, easily cruised to a fourth term in the midterm elections after beating back an aborted primary challenge from Liz Cheney, daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney. Enzi has more seniority on the Budget Committee, but Sessions, of Alabama, is popular in the conservative activist community for his firm opposition to comprehensive immigration reform.
"We're talking. I'd like to be the chair," Enzi told the Washington Examiner.
Sessions also confirmed that Enzi was after the Budget gavel. But when asked how he felt about it, said only: "We're good friends."
Although seniority can govern committee chairmanships in the Senate, any member junior or not can challenge for the gavel. Such campaigns are decided by the Republican members of the committee, only.
Republicans are preparing to assume command of the Senate in January after winning control of the chamber in the midterm elections. Part of that process involves negotiating committee-assignment ratios, with the Democrats and determining powerful chairmanships.
Most of this work probably won't happen until after a December runoff in Louisiana is decided. Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu is being challenged by GOP Rep. Bill Cassidy in that race.

Can't have a REAL conservative be in charge of an influential committee, oh no!
McConnell's probably behind this.
LMAO! Conservatives, as a whole, are blind in today’s politics. Just because they think what’s right is what should happen doesn’t mean it will.
Rush called Enzi’s move the indicator of a fiscal cave-in by the RINO leadership in the Senate.
Rush was talking about this today, that Sessions would fight against funding Obie’s immigration fiasco.
The two vote pretty similarly but Enzi is a go-along guy while Sessions is a bull, and a thorn in the moderate republicans’ side!
Enzi (WY) - 2020 - 83% (Average) - 76% (CReview) - 76% (Heritage) - 94% (CFG) - 88% (ACU) - 82% (FreedomWorks)
Sessions (AL) - 2020 - 83% (Average) - 80% (CReview) - 79% (Heritage) - 88% (CFG) - 88% (ACU) - 82% (FreedomWorks)
I’m calling Enzi and tell him to back off. Sessions is the main voice against Obama’s lawlessness on amnesty.
I hope that McConnell has the wisdom to do two things related to this article:
1: Don’t give in to ‘RAT demands for ratios of representation on the committees in order to be “nice” (known to the ‘RATS as being a sucker)
and
2. Understand that Sessions will be a MAJOR asset as Budget Committee chair.
Will McConnell have the wisdom? Only if he wants to be a good and faithful servant to the American people and the Republic.
Don't let those orgs do your thinking or research for you.

After what Obama is going to pull, there is no way Enzi should get this. Sessions is too much of a fighter to back down from this fight.
Pretty sad to watch the Republican Leadership SELL OUT THE AMERICAN PEOPLE before they are even Sworn In. Not sure about the rest of you folks but this really pisses me off, but I expected it, just not this soon!
I hope that McConnell has the wisdom to do two things related to this article:???
He’s already waving a White Flag, the deals have been made, we have been SOLD OUT by the LEADERSHIP already.
Enzo hasn’t done anything in decades, why should we expect it now?
I wish Cheney would have beaten the fossil.
The elites fear Sessions. He talks the talk AND walks the walk. They will do anything they can do keep him from having any power. However Sessions will never back down on amnesty. If we lose this fight he will be the last member of congress still standing for we the people.
” McConnell’s probably behind this. “
probably?
Vitter should attack GOP leadership on this. Tell them they are hurting Cassidy and hurting his Gov run.
Also Cassidy should immediately back Sessions. The House delegation from Mississippi should also back Sessions because the base is still pissed at them for supporting Cochran.
GOP Senate Leadership Pushes Sessions Out of Budget Chairmanship?
....Jeff Sessions is the chairman of the Budget Committee in the Senate. Jeff Sessions is also the most eloquent, consistent, outspoken critic of illegal immigration, amnesty. He is writing op-eds. He is delivering effective speeches from the floor of the Senate. He’s just all over. He has been tireless in his characterization of the danger that this portends to the country, to the future. In a way, Jeff Sessions has actually been a lone voice in the Senate. There have been others, of course. Ted Cruz comes to mind, and Mike Lee.
Well, the other bit of news today is that the Republican leadership in the Senate wants to kick Sessions off the budget committee and take the chairmanship away from him and give it to Mike Enzi of Wyoming. And if that happens, that pretty much tells us everything we need to know about what’s going to happen with the Republicans in the Senate.
If the most effective, the most tireless, the most committed, the most eloquent anti-amnesty spokesman in the Senate is to be removed from his Budget Committee chairmanship — that is where the power of the purse would be used. And it would obviously be assumed that Sessions would be in favor of denying the administration the money necessary to implement this amnesty.
So the story is out there that they want to get rid of Sessions and remove him from the Budget Committee chairmanship and put Mike Enzi in there. Mike Enzi is a nice guy, but he’s not a babbler. So if the leadership wants to get Sessions out of the way — and again, it’s just a news story. I’ll get the source for you here as soon as I take the break. That alone tells you where the Republican leadership mind-set is on this.
If this happens....we have all of our suspicions about Bonehead and McConnell confirmed. This would be an atrocity.
Jeff Sessions is the leader in Congress on immigration. He will use the Budget committee to stop Obama's lawlessness. It will be a sad day if Enzi becomes the chairman.
Mitch is setting up BIG ARSE FAILURE DeuX!!!
What a waste of time and talent.. And opportunity!!
GOP RIP tomorrow night.
