A woman who had recently returned from West Africa suddenly died while being styled at a Brooklyn hair salon Tuesday afternoon, sparking an Ebola panic as responders in HazMat suits scrambled to secure the scene.

The 40-year-old woman keeled over in her salon chair inside the business on Belmont Avenue in Brownsville at 2:30 p.m. She was pronounced dead at the scene from an apparent heart attack, sources said.

Several city agencies, including the Department of Health and Office of Emergency Management, quickly cordoned off Amy’s Professional African Hair Braiding ahead of Ebola testing, officials said.

The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene said the woman, whose identity was not immediately released, returned from West Africa 18 days ago and appeared symptom-free prior to her sudden death.

Something is wrong with this story. If she was being monitored for Ebola, this seems like a remarkably rapid onset of symptoms, culminating in dropping dead. Bleeding out is an end-stage symptom, not initially present.
