We at PJ Media were saddened to learn that the daughter of Victor Davis Hanson, author, educator, and PJ Media columnist, died on November 13 after a short illness.
Susannah Merry Hanson was 27.
In a beautiful, moving tribute to his daughter, Dr. Hanson tells us of Susannahs marvelous gifts:
Susannah, known to her family and friends as Suzy, was beloved by anyone who encountered her infectious laugh and her zeal for life and adventure. But she was perhaps best known for the human kindness she extended to everyone she met. She was especially drawn to the sick and elderly, which reflected her sense of public service. On the European trips she ensured that no tour member was ever left alone or without companionship.
Her family and friends feel blessed that even for such a brief time that they were able to be with such a kind soul and accomplished talent. She grew up packing fruit and working in the fields of the family farm, a childhood that fostered a singular work ethic, gave her a sense of independence and fearlessness, and grounded her in reality and modesty wherever she worked and traveled. She loved the San Joaquin Valley, and despite her residence and visits abroad, she always managed to return to the farm, where she felt most at home with her family and childhood friends.
Please keep our friend and colleague, Victor Davis Hanson, in your thoughts and prayers
omg this is HORRIBLE.
Such a gorgeous daughter, and Dr. Hanson is an amazing writer.
I’ve heard him interviewed so much, not only talking about history but his incredibly vivid, bicycle-centric descriptions of the steadily-yuckified area of Fresno, so sad.
I almost feel like I know him, I read his material so often.
I just don’t know what to say...just wow...
:(
Oh, FRiend, I can’t imagine your loss, our children are our life, so sorry...
There are some authors who besides respect and appreciation for their scholarship, grant enough of their personal character that you develop a warm regard for them as a person. VDH is that sort of author and my heart goes out to he and his family at this difficult time.
They are in my prayers.
We lost our sister this summer. What our mother is going through is unimaginable.
I’m pretty sure it’s the hardest thing you can experience in this life.
Prayers up for VDH, the family and the lovely “Suzy”. Taken too soon.
R.I.P.
Prayers for VDH and peaceful repose for his daughter.
Oh so sad, but thank you for posting; VDH is one of my favorites.
Ohhh...this is so sad.
Prayers for his family.
Susannah Merry-what a pretty name. So, so sad I can’t ever imagine what it must feel like to lose a child.
OMG Prayers up for Dr. Hanson and his family.
prayers for Dr. Hanson and family.
With her dad
What a lovely pic that I’m sure “Dad” will always cherish...
Prayers and condolences for Dr.Hanson and Family...
What was the illness, or has the family decided to keep that private, as is their right? She looks the picture of health in those photos. We often train ourselves to forget just how very vulnerable we are on any day, at any hour.
Such a tragedy. RIP beautiful girl.
Prayers up for VDH and his family. She was two years younger than my youngest. I cannot imagine...
No parent should ever have to suffer the pain of out living their child
My heart breaks for Dave
What a beautiful girl and a horrendous loss. God Bless Suzy and all of those who loved her.
