The Republican unity tour with former rivals Rep. Bill Cassidy and Rob Maness will continue Saturday (Nov. 15) afternoon with a rally featuring the two of them, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and "Duck Dynasty" star Phil Robertson.
Maness drew 14 percent of the vote in the primary, and Cassidy needs that to defeat Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu. Though Palin and Robertson are sometimes controversial figures outside the most conservative circles, political observers believe Cassidy is doing the right thing by aligning himself with the right wing of the party to earn that support.
LSU political scientist Robert Hogan said he was "shocked" when he heard Cassidy would appear with Robertson because of how controversial he has become, but he said Cassidy's willingness to stand with him says less about Cassidy and more about the electorate. He said the most important thing for Cassidy is to mobilize the base, which isn't done by drifting toward the middle in Louisiana.
"It seems clear given the ideological stand point of (Maness) supporters and the come-togetherness that they will give their support to Cassidy," Hogan said. "Maness wasn't puling from the middle. The Tea Party is motivated, and they usually vote in elections."
Joshua Stockley, a political scientist at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, said Cassidy does risk alienating some moderate voters as he drifts further right, but that's ok because motivating the base should be his top priority.
"In midterm elections, moderates and independents are less likely to show up than Democrats and Republicans. I don't think he minds the trade-off," Stockley said. "For Cassidy, moderates are a bonus. They're icing on the cake."

Candidates in the 5th Congressional District race, Republican Ralph Abraham and Democrat Jamie Mayo, appeared on Louisiana Public Broadcasting on Friday (Nov. 14) to discuss their positions on the issues facing the nation.
Abraham talked about his experience as a doctor, veterinarian, veteran, humanitarian and business owner. He touted his conservative positions and said the choice should be clear between himself and Mayo.
Mayo talked about the financial success of the city of Monroe under his leadership as mayor. He positioned himself as a pragmatic moderate willing to work across the aisle to benefit the district.

Really, Prof Hogan? Sounds as though he is one of those who has a problem with the Bible’s teaching on homosexuality which Phil Robinson believes. That will not hurt Cassidy’s campaign.
Bringing in the moose and duck hunters! :)
All demonRATS lie, cheat and steal, so we have to work harder. Sarah and the father of the quackers, what a duo.
It is ALL TURNOUT.
While Karl Rove, the rest of the GOP Establishment, and Republican consultants (most of them gay, by the way) may be CRINGING, this is how you ACTUALLY WIN elections.
They seem to be hinting that in the rest of the nation, one can't mobilize the base by drifting to the right. That could be true, but drifting toward the middle-left DOES demoralize Christian conservatives, and once demoralized stay will stay home.
They have been the difference in 2 straight elections. They stayed home on Romney; they came out and voted during the mid-terms just completed.
So, would the elite establishment republicans prefer them to stay home or to come out and vote? They know how to make either happen.
I pray Ms. Mary Mary Quite Contrary days in the Senate are DONE~!
I guess he could have campaigned with Howard Baker, but I’m not sure that would have motivated the base as much.
Yes, he’s running a serious race, and I’m happy to learn from you that he’s not taking anything for granted.
Those Landreui’s and the demonic-rats have a way of stealing elections.
Me too!
LA is my neighbor state.
I wish I could go across the River and vote....
That should bring in a lot semi neutral hard working blue collar guys, who are tired of the tax and spend policies of the previously entrenched elite Rat $inators.
This thing is loaded with the usual hysteria and weasel words.
Couldn't agree more!
I Pray our great FReepers get a chance to head over to Louisiana and see her and her Duck Dynasty Buddies!
The "Party of the Working Class" keeps the Working Class poorer through their Sh!t like the Income Tax >:(
I’m reliably told that the de facto campaign manager for Cassidy is Sen. David Vitter. He didn’t want to be out front during the campaign, but is in fact calling the shots.
He did a good job, as evidenced by the results.
BTW, Vitter will be our next Governor.
Ah, thanks for the info.
I like Senator Vitter!
We have several younger relatives who are responsible for hiring and providing work for a lot of hard working blue collar men. Men of all colors and ages, who work hard and are good family guys.
The frustrating thing for our relatives the past 6 years has been these blue collar guys voting for Herr Obama and backing his policies.
Besides being hard working guys, a large % are hunters and own guns. Yet, they really didn’t realize how the Obozoites have been trying to take away their guns.
The good news re these guys this past election comes in two parts
1. A large % voted for republicans.
2. Former Obama voters stayed home and didn’t vote.
Mary was for her Bam before she was against him? Sorry Miss Boss Hoggie but you can’t undo your votes now. You stood by your Bam but he’s stood you up long ago. Under the bus you go as your Bam could care less about you or Louisiana. Au revoir bacon blonde.
Right.
