Ukrainian Jewish leaders claim anti-Semitism is much worse in France and even UK, suggest Russia playing it up as a political ploy.
Anti-Semitism is on the rise in Ukraine, Russian officials have insisted over the past several months - but local Jewish leaders say that life for Ukrainian Jewry is actually "safer and easier" than in the West.
Shmuel Kaminetsky, a rabbi in Dnipropetrovsk, noted that anti-Semitism in Ukraine is much lighter than in Britain or France, where the threat of radical Islam is palpable.
The VAAD has stepped up its public campaign to dismiss rumors of rampant anti-Semitism in Ukraine, claiming it is a "political tool" being wielded by Russian President Vladimir Putin to justify Moscow's support for Ukrainian rebel forces.
In an open letter published earlier this week addressed to Putin, VAAD says Moscow - in fact - "might have confused Ukraine with Russia, where Jewish organizations registered a rise of anti-Semitism last year."

Are Ukraine Jews anything like American Jews? I mean, is it too broad a term to be of much value? Do opinions pretty much shape around politics and the Jew part bows to that? I really don’t know.

All the leaders of Ukrainian Jewish organizations wrote an open letter to Putin asking him to stay away and not invade to “protect them” as Jews in Ukraine have it much better than Jews in Russia.
Ref your question on commonality between Ukrainian and American Jews: My research has not addressed this specifically. In a general sense, there has always been the politics of survival for Jewish communities living as small minorities throughout the world. And there are always portions of every community(Jewish & Gentile)who subordinate their religious beliefs to their political beliefs. My observation is that this is far more common for those on the political left (this includes all varieties of socialists).
