Despite losing at least eight seats, and probably nine before all the votes are counted by 2015, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) has not faced much in the way of a public pushback from his fellow Democrats until today.
Purple state Democrat Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) revealed on Thursday that she will not back Reid in his role as minority leader in the next Congress.
The revelation came as a surprise when she was asked by reporters if she would stand by Reid. I will not, McCaskill replied.
Yesterday, I met with Harry Reid and told him I would not be supporting him for minority leader, McCaskill said in a subsequent statement. I heard the voters of Missouri loud and clear. They want change in Washington. Common sense tells me that begins with changes in leadership.
Roll Call noted that the currents of discontent are surging just below the Senate Democratic conferences placid surface.
In 2010, McCaskill drew laughs from a group of reporters when she floated backing the third-ranking Senate Democrat, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) for majority leader. “I promise I’ll think about voting for you as leader, she told those who attended that years Washington Press Club Dinner. The best jokes, as we know, are those with a grain of truth to them.
Via Jazz Shaw, Reid is not the only person at the center of a Democratic leadership shakeup. In order to pacify a disgruntled Democrat base, Shaw wrote, Reid has approached progressive darling Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) to gauge her interest in taking a leadership role in the Senate. Because, as McCaskill said, the message the voters sent Washington last Tuesday was clearly that the Senate Democratic leadership is not liberal enough.
In the end, however, its all just a political display:
Memo to world + @clairecmc – unless someone challenges Reid in caucus, there is no real vote for leader. He wins by acclamation. Unanimous.

Victorious Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) was confirmed his leadership position by acclamation on Thursday, which is likely how Reid will retain his leadership role. McCaskill’s maneuver serves primarily as a political statement, and an unmistakable one at that..
UPDATE:
Reid reelected Dem, thus far Sens aren't answering questions on how close it was

An earlier version of this post’s headline identified Harry Reid as the Senate majority leader. He will be vacating that role in 2015.
Come out against Obama’s executive order on amnesty and
we’ll take you serous, Claire.
Claire showing more bravery than any member of the GOP is
Bingo.
Reid already won; who cares now?
Gotta love that Democratic transparency.

Upchuck Schumer would be much better. /s
Claire is the one who has tried for years to get NBC taken out of the POTUS requirements and was on the Senate Resolution 511 committee to vet McCain’s NBC. hussein and Hillary were also on the committee and agreed NBC meant BOTH parents must be US citizens. Funny how she didn’t see fit to vet the usurper.
Now we just need some Conservative opposition and backers on our side.
Really? Relative to who? Karl Marx?
Cat fight!
Well, Claire, leadership will be Mitch McConnell come January. Perhaps you can caucus with the Republicans.
Really? Is she talking about OUR elections? Here? In the United States?
Perhaps not. perhaps they had elections in Bolivia or Venezuela last Tuesday, also...
Unless her pick is Fauxcahontas....
Obama’s executive order can be repealed in part or in whole by congress. It is demonstrably unlawful.
Boener would not say anything other than all options are on the table. However, when pushed he said “presidents want this and that and he won’t be getting anything”
No talk of repealing the executive order. Not surprised.
This has nothing to do with dissension in the Dimocrats ranks, it's all about this witch running to the right so she has something to show the bumpkins back home at election time.
It still astounds me that my fellow Missourian's re-elected this piece of filth in '12.
I’m no fan of Dingy Harry, but I really think the obstructionism and bill-killing spree that have marked his tenure as (soon to be ex) Senate Majority Leader was largely Obama marching orders.
Not giving Reid a pass because of that, of course. I’m just saying that I don’t think things would have been all that different with some other Democratic Senator as SML the past six years.
I’m pretty sure she got Harry’s permission to say this.
According to ABC Radio News, there were 2 defectors in the Reid election as minority leader for 2015.
They were Joe Manchin (WVA) and Claire McCaskill (MO).
Tea leaves duly read.
