St. Louis St. Louis County police said they have spent around $100,000 stocking up on riot gear and other items they may need if protests turn violent after prosecutors announce whether a Ferguson officer will face criminal charges in the shooting death of Michael Brown. And CNN reports that citizens are also preparing for the grand jury ruling: gun sales are up in St. Louis.
A state grand jury has been meeting since shortly after Brown, who was 18 and black, was shot and killed by Officer Darren Wilson, who is white, on Aug. 9. Brown was unarmed and some witnesses said he was trying to surrender. Wilson's attorneys have repeatedly declined comment.
St. Louis County prosecutor Bob McCulloch has said the grand jury decision is expected in mid- to late November. His spokesman, Ed Magee, said Monday that the decision will come no earlier than Saturday, but the exact date is not yet known. McCulloch is urging people to ignore what he calls "rank speculation" in social media about the grand jury.

During my 11 years as a FReeper I must have seen hundreds of declarations that Detroit was going to burn over this issue or that. The simple fact is that such things are seldom spontaneous and the agitators have moved on to greener pastures.
About 3 days after the Mike Brown shooting police shot and killed a man in Detroit. Some local agitators showed up to stir things a bit but the locals weren’t interested and it was largely forgotten by the next morning.
I fully expect violence in Ferguson and maybe some minor unrest elsewhere but I really don’t see any reason to believe there will be any large scale widespread violence.
That will probably be the case unless some of the protestors around Ferguson get set up and are killed in the process to make it seem like a race war had started. Depending on how much the protest organizers want the war, it could happen.
I was a mile or two from ground zero in the rodney king riots they burned my building i was rehabbing and the whole fing block that night i was husted out to my truck by a black guy i befriended who owned a traffic school next door weeks early we ran the gauntlet and he said to all the ferals i was not to be touched it worked He told me not to stop for anything get over the hill i went down on sat and the block was gone with the exception of the bank fault being guarded by Ca. National gaurdsmen never did see him again
Negative not at ground zero just stating it could be
Sunday morning - right before dawn would be a great time to make the announcement.
If riots happen in sub freezing temperatures, what a perfect time to put the water hoses to good use.

I would see better investments in ‘Marlin’, ‘Rossi’, ‘Winchester’, ‘Mossberg’, and ‘Uberti’.
Preferably in ‘.444 Marlin’, ‘.45-70 Government’, ‘.454 Casull’, ‘.450 Marlin’, or, ‘.500 SandW’.
Can’t let a purely American piece of technology go to waste, can we?
Los Angeles 1992 (Rodney King) and 1995 (OJ Simpson, which went the “other” way and resulted in celebrations instead of rioting). I was there for both, and I will not forget.
The people of Ferguson will not forget either.
We need to have the polar vortex descend on Ferguson right now —

How about Saturday around 7pm?
Put me in the ‘lots of smoke, but no fire’ column. It will largely be a dud.
A celebration?
I give your comment a 2 on the HH scale.
LOL - yeah my second choice...
I'll bet they will riot no matter what the verdict may be....
Overkill. 38/357 would be better choice, if one insists on using a lever gun.
I think an AR15 would be a better choice yet. 10x30-round mags in a tactical vest/carrier along with secondary (SA pistol with 3 mags). Extra rounds will be appreciated if you need turn a large mob. Fast shot recovery, and quick movement on to the next target. Holographic or adjustable red dot sights. 4x optics are an option as well.
The optic will come in handy if one wants to engage beyond 50 yards at night in low light.
When the leading rabble start falling, other less dedicated rioters will notice and it will change their perspective. They’ll move away from the flashes.
dear nonsporting,
I love the .357 lever actions. I suggested the .45-70 round, because at riot distance, you won’t need so many, because of that pesky ‘overpenetration’ thing! and since there are buffalo Bore rounds in .45-70, I can imagine the poor defender’s shoulder after a tube or two of THEM! Also, ANY .45-70 rounds, are NOT cheap, but they ARE effective.
As a radio guy that I get on the Internet from Houston says,
“Shoot a few and watch the rest of them disperse.”
+1
I wish they would just get it over with.
