Regular marijuana use muddles your brain more than you think: Study

Researchers from the Center for BrainHealth at The University of Texas at Dallas have found evidence that the effects of chronic marijuana use may depend on when a person started smoking pot and for how long.

For the study, which was published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on Nov. 10, Francesca Filbey from the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences at the University of Texas at Dallas, and colleagues involved 48 adult marijuana users who started to use weed when they were between 14 and 30 years old.

The participants smoked pot thrice a day on average; most admitted that they had been using weed for 10 years. Some participants reported they had been using marijuana for 30 years.

The researchers had the participants take an IQ test and undergo MRI scans. They then compared the results with those of 62 individuals who were nonusers and found that in cognitive tests, marijuana users had lower IQ compared with those who did not smoke pot.

Even the authors of the article equivocate:

“While previous studies have showed that marijuana causes harm to the brains of animals, researchers said they couldn’t be sure whether marijuana use was the cause of the negative changes in the brain.”

Most of my alcoholic friends don’t have a drinking problem either just ask them.

What drinking problem?

And they become withdrawn and introverted. I’ve seen it enough to know. It’s a very anti-social drug.

Only by the 12 Step programs and a daily reprieve granted by my Higher Power, do I even have the capacity to post today.

The participants smoked pot thrice a day on average;

Let's run the study on people who use Martinis thrice daily... breakfast, lunch and dinner.

What a stupid study... how about testing normal people who only use pot like they would use a cocktail.

I’ve a relative going through treatment now. I’m praying it will be okay for him. Glad to hear you could turn it around.

It’s a destructive drug and I suspect we’ll see reams of medical research the next few years that will bear this out. Sorry potheads. The stuff is not good for you. OK duuuuuude!

Nah.

I’ve smoked. It’s true.

I mean what would people expect though.

It’s kind of like drinking beer makes you drunk, and when you are drunk you’re generally not very good at anything.

I still believe it is a personal choice though. If someone wants to live with their head in the clouds, that’s their business.

A very poor decision tough. I have really come to enjoy a clear head. I wish I had that preference when I was younger.

It's possible, but remember, Recovery is NOT for people who need it. It is for people who WANT it.

If it's not from inside him or her, 100%, they are screwed.

Is your point that there are no heavy pot users who smoke three times a day? It seems very likely. I know some folks probably only smoke once a week, too. If the point is that the study is not correct because it had heavier than normal pot smokers, then doesn't it show, that just like alcohol abuse, the more you use in a day over the longer period, the worse it is for your brain?

I never understand why these types of studies are upsetting.

Perhaps their nature is withdrawn and introverted to start with, and that is why they smoke.

One version of this article that I read this morning, stated that the IQ of marijuana users was lower than non-users but that it could not be determined if the marijuana was a causative factor because they had not done before after tests. The previous study did before and after studies.

I’m not a big fan of “studies” but there must be some truth to this. Those pushing to “legalize” marijuana keep telling the commie lib politicians to “tax the hell out of it.” You have to be a little off to spew that kind of BS.

The previous study was done over twenty years and did before and after tests.

It has been my experience that friends who smoke or ingest marijuana regularly become extremely argumentative , dogmatic and irrational. They always act too tired to explain their reasoning, though.
