Andy Rooney hates to be called a veteran
cBS news ^ | 11/10/14 | Andy Rooney

Posted on 11/11/2014 4:11:57 AM PST by AT7Saluki

I keep this calendar on my desk, and while I don't look at it very often I notice that this Wednesday is Veterans Day. It's one of ten federal holidays that we have. Well, I'm a veteran but I hate that name. Considering that we aren't technically at war now, there's an awful lot about war in the news, too, even when it's not something like Veterans Day. I suppose that's because there's so much fighting in the world. There are half a dozen small wars going on right now, some of them in places most of us have never been to or even never heard of before. Too many young men and women with a whole life ahead of them are getting killed before they have a chance to live it and for what?

Well Andy the answer to that is for freedom, liberty and to stop oppression and murder and to save others lives. That is what the American Military Veterans does. So sorry that you could not understand that without being told..........

“He blasted General Patton. Rooney was not that bright.”

I have known several men who served in 3rd Army. Without exception the achievers loved Patton and the slackers hated him.

Very well said, rfreedom4u, and I agree with you. Veterans like Andy Rooney earned the right to their own opinions, and I respect his. War is not always wrong, but it should always be the last resort. America has lately been sheltered from war’s greatest horrors by current technological advantages, and that has made us more inclined to enter every potential fight. But others have not been shielded from those horrors and reality will turn that tide against us one day. Sometimes we need to hear the unpopular voices to remind us of the costs.

Rooney was a useful reminder that not everyone in the Greatest Generation was great.

I agree that war should be a last resort. But once started it should be prosecuted to the fullest so that it ends quickly in victory. Using restraint only sends a signal of weakness to our enemies which they will use against us. Collateral damage should be avoided but not at all costs.

A civilian populace that supports war (through active or passive means) against us should feel the pain of war in order to make them oppose warring against us in the future. Let them know that they are responsible for the leaders they have (whether elected or not). If the hardships of war are too much for the civil population to bear, then they need to change their leadership through whatever means necessary.

I wholeheartedly agree with prosecuting war to the fullest against enemy combatants.

The moral duty of combatants to respect the immunity of noncombatants has been largely forgotten today by men, but not by God. It has been almost 150 years since the horrors of war were felt here in America, so our senses have been dulled to the suffering that war brings to noncombatants. Civilian populations already feel the pain of war, and there is no excuse for punishing unarmed civilians who are not actively fighting against us. In fact, if the civilians are not on our side, it might be a clue that we should not be fighting there in the first place. Not every fight around the world is our business.

Not every fight around the world is our business.

It is immensely sad that our politicians don’t believe this.

Since 911, I have looked upon all Muslims as deserving to die because they didn’t attack our military, they killed our civilians. For that deed we need to kill them at a rate of 1000 to 1 as a solid reminder that killing American civilians is something that will bring serious pain into your world.
