A new deal dramatically extending the length of visas for individuals traveling between the U.S. and China will be a game-changer for relations between Washington and Beijing, the White House said Monday.
The U.S. and China will now issue short-term tourist and business visas that are valid for up to 10 years. Students traveling between the two countries will now be granted visas lasting five years. Previously, all three types had been valid only for a single year.
In terms of the U.S.-China bilateral relationship, this is a game-changer, said National Security Council Senior Director for Asian Affairs Evan Medeiros.
A senior administration official described the pact as a really big win that could lead to hundreds of thousands of additional U.S. jobs thanks to increased Chinese tourism.
According to the White House, some 100 million Chinese tourists travel internationally each year, but only 1.8 million come to the U.S. partially because of the arduous visa requirements. President Obama said Monday he expected travel to as much as quadruple under the new agreement.
“The U.S. and China will now issue short-term tourist and business visas that are valid for up to 10 years.”
in what universe does “short term” and “10 years” come together?
when traveling overseas on short-term visas, it’s common to take a flight to a neighboring country, step out of the airport for a moment (just get your passport stamped) and then fly back... resetting your stay duration.
i’ve done this a number of times overseas
I welcome the best and brightest around the world to come here, I just don't support 3rd world refugees with no education and no intention to work when they get here coming here illegally to mooch off our welfare system.
My comment on the Hill thread:
“Say hello to millions and millions of new Chinese immigrants, who will be amnestied and voting Democrat in a few years, as our Quisling traitor elites (both Rats and GOPes) collaborate to replace the pesky American electorate.”
Why hack when they let you in the door?.
going to add tourist jobs? is that all we care about, being waitresses to China man?
I see a weak numerator hiding a strong denominator, typical whore of Babylon deal.
indeed, the China town front business was bad enough, now it is not just drugs and tax evasion, but nuke smuggling.
Obama’s plan to destroy the US ,fill it with people like him
thanks - ten year visas will become permanent visas. China has already done a masterful job infiltrating major businesses, industries and the government. Buying US debt, they already control a sizable amount of our economy. What happens when “the” event happens and they pull the plug??
Yeah. I’ve done it as well, though I’ve always spent a few days in the country to which I traveled for the visa run. I’ve known lots of folks who make similar trips regularly.
People who can make visa trips typically have the resources to support themselves. The very fact that they make a visa trip indicates that they respect the law that sets forth the conditions of their visa. Further, they have to present themselves to an border agent every time upon return. So, if the visa holder has any outstanding warrants or other legal issues bearing upon re-entry, he can be detained at the border crossing or denied entry.
Exhibit A: Lenovo - What once was given objection for national security concerns that still exist, now walks away with three US companies without objection.
Exhibit B: Huawei - Nortel parts, Chinese government leadership. Thankfully banned from certain areas of civilized countries, unlike Lenovo.
This is a good thing for US business travelers. Renewing China business visas every year is expensive and burdensome.
“And I for one welcome our new Chinese overlords.”
Agree that it is good for business visas...I get a one year visa every year for my 4-5 trips to China per year. It is a pain renewing yearly.
I believe that if you are here legally for seven years, you can apply for citizenship.
Gee, I wonder what the outcome of this will be?
Chain migration?
That too...
LOL>
Although it’s not funny, that’s about all you can do these days. Laugh.
It’s absurd.
The outcome will be even more Chinese communist student-spies coming over here.
