obvious competence might not be enough in our celebrity-obsessed society.

It hasn't been, since the time of the Nixon-Kennedy debates in 1960.

Anyone who hopes to win the White House has got to have high marks on a laundry list of attributes - number one of which, is the ability to connect with the public in a charismatic way.

If a presidential hopeful doesn't have that, they may as well stay put in the office where they're doing well.
