For many years, the Philadelphia Orchestra had a female timpanist who always timed her pregnancies to deliver during the off-season. It was said that every baby she bore came out with its hands over its ears.

Yes, taking the train. The miles driven in the Van drops from 40-50 per day to 6 per day. Parking of $22.00 per day turns to train fare of $5.00 per day and Metro fare of $3.00 per day.

It also entails walking that I would not otherwise be doing and that I very dearly need.

Vocally, pianissimos are the most difficult, as you must maintain resonance and tone quality while decreasing the volume.

Not “Whispering”. Not “falsetto”. Not “Breathiness”.

I tell my students to imagine a volume control (either a fader or a knob) inside their heads, and MENTALLY turn down the volume without affecting the quality of the tone.

WW1 was an international trauma that has not been soothed even a century later.

I am looking forward to your presentation.

I really tried to get in first, but it is appropriate that a US MARINE beat me to it!

There is nothing more exquisite, IMNSHO, as the decrescendo to pianissisimo in the final phrase of "Macushla" as sung by John McCormack.

In more recent times, Pavarotti was most impressive in this regard. Everyone was ecstatic about his high "C's" - I was most impressed by his ability to sing exquisitely and very, very softly.

God, I miss him!

Thanks very much, ML! I hesitate to call myself a Marine, but I must admit, all the Marines I have met regard me as a Brother.

Out of all the things I have done in my life, what I am most proud of is that I had the honor to serve as an FMF Corpsman in combat with the renowned 3rd Battalion, Fifth Marine Regiment.

You can't buy that.

God Bless the United States Marine Corps!

God Bless the United States of America!

Among my students, “High C’s” are common and EXPECTED.

Dynamics, however, is a part of the singers art that requires a lot of “fine tuning”.

Here is how i teach Voice in the first lesson. I list the seven notes in the musical alphabet and then define them:

1. A is for Accuracy. If your pitches, timing, or lyrics are wrong, you will sound like an idiot no matter how pretty your voice is!

2. B is for Breathing. There are very important rules for breathing and if you don’t do it right, it can ruin an otherwise perfect line.

3. C is for Color. That is that wonderful quality that identifies your voice as YOU. It comes from perfect and consistent vocal placement in the head, Open throat, Perfect Vowels, and proper consonants and phrasing, as well as a consistent High-Low mix throughout the vocal range with no breaks.

4. D is For Dynamics. Your POWER comes from the perfect contrast and transition from loud to soft and back again.

5. E is for emotion and expression, both of which are useless unless you master the first four things on this list.

6. F is for Flexibility, Freedom, and Fancy Stuff. Improvisation should not be attempted if you don’t know your music!

7. G is your Goal...a Great, Gigantic, Gorgeous Voice!

(This is part of the vocal Course that i have developed. It woks as well with a 6 year old as it does for a 60 year old, and although seems strict, really works!)
