Why would a country that describes itself as a sovereign, socialist, secular democratic republic in its constitution do any of that?

Why would a country that describes itself as a sovereign, socialist, secular democratic republic in its constitution do any of that? The words "socialist"and "secular" were added by Indira Gandhi in 1975 during the emergency. There are some opinions that they were added unconstitionally as parliament was suspended at the time. Since then, the only Govt to have enough of a majority to remove them has been Indira Gandhi's son.
