Think Twice About Illinois’s Crony Republican Governor-Elect
SPECTATOR.ORG ^ | 07 NOVEMBER 2014 | WILLIAM J KELLY

With Bruce Rauner’s election in Illinois, the Republican Governor’s Association has checked this bluer-than-blue state off its Democrat tick list. It must feel good—but I’m less than sanguine.

For the better part of a year, powerful Chicago Democrats have been whispering in my ear, extolling Rauner’s virtues. I heard similar insider political “chatter” about Barack Obama from these same Democrats long before he ran for U.S. Senate. Even the left-leaning Chicago Sun-Times suddenly changed its no-endorsement policy to back Rauner — and only Rauner — without even the basic formality of a candidate questionnaire or interview.

>> I thought it was a requirement that all Illinois governors report to federal prison after their term in office? <<

Yep. Give it time, Quinn will be indicted for something sooner or later. They should just save time by indicting Rauner at his swearing in.

>> I bet he isn't as far left as Mitt Romney <<

You bet wrong.

>> He’s liberal. People make a fuss about his party label. Rauner ain’t no conservative. <<

Worse, he's not even a Republican. He's a "close personal friend" of Rahm who has spent years bankrolling the most odious marxist Democrats who are destroying this country. Rauner is Illinois' answer to Michael Bloomberg -- some filthy rich leftist who came in and bought the GOP nomination because the Dem slot was taken, and spent millions to advertise himself as a saavy "outsider" private-sector businessman who would clean up government.

>> With guys like this - the Democrats have already won. It didn’t matter a heck that Pat Quinn lost. <<

Bingo. And even if we're wrong and Rauner turns out to be decent and actually tries to "stop" the Madigan machine (fat chance of that happening), it won't matter because the Dems have a veto proof majority and can run the government from the legislature. The only thing Rauner gets is the blame when Madigan's policies further destroy Illinois.

>> There is only one party here and it’s The Combine. <<

Yep you nailed it. And if Rauner weren't a Combiner, Quinn would be celebrating his re-election right now.

I live in Chicago. I sincerely doubt that many Conservatives stayed home because Rauner wasn’t conservative enough. He won in a deep blue state.

Did he check off all the Conservative boxes? No. Did he replace a far left liberal democrat? Yes.

This is a win for us.

GIVE HIM A CHANCE! 4 years! Out here in Calif we had a guy statewide that gave $10k to the Al Gore recount. Let him poke us in the eye a few times. If he cuts taxes, stands up to the unions? If he pulls an Arnold cut him off.

Yeah, Rauner is the only type of guy who actually would stand a chance of getting elected in Illinois.

What he’ll do for Illinois residents is try to check the growth of government before they spend themselves into even more oblivion. This was the best IL could do.

And if it isn’t enough for Illinois residents, move to Wisconsin. We are going red after 3 straight Scott Walker wins.

You’re either in it or you’re not. Elections are fixed accordingly. Quinn was the designated loser and Rauner the designated winner. Until the Combine is destroyed, nothing in IL will ever change.

Stupid Freepers on here whoop over a "Republican" win and say give the man a chance. Really? How is Rauner even a Republican in the first place? Read and weep:

You see, for decades, Rauner, a wealthy venture capitalist and former chairman of private equity firm GTCR, donated millions to the Democratic Party to help defeat Republican candidates. That “investment” has paid dividends.

With a Democrat turncoat like Rauner, Republicans don't need enemies. That the ILGOP saw fit to nominate him, tell us all we need to know.

If a pre-fixed election winner is the best IL can do, IL is permanently screwed.

Sure, he’s no Conservative, but, with the power Chicago has over the Illinois electorate, this is a major step in the right direction.

No it's not.

He's a Rat pretending to be a Pub. When things get worse because the Rat controlled House and Senate won't fix things it now gets blamed on the "Pub policies".

One county in the entire state controls the state and Rauner is as much a part of that corrupt group as Rahm Emanuel and Bill Daley. Rauner comes from the affluent north shore suburbs just as Rahm Emanuel and I believe Rahm and Rauners wife use to be at the same synagogue.

I suppose Mitt loving fans like you believe we should just let Democrats pretend they are Republicans and win.

And the people of IL are are stupid as you are.

Its corrupt.

The Democrats dumped Quinn because he was a liability. But in Rauner they have a fellow traveler.

Rauner is a big Democratic donor, supporter of liberal causes and and a believer in transforming America.

Oh yeah, people like you are easily fooled because they worship at the party label.

I believe if a person doesn’t have character, principle and values, we won’t get the leaders we truly deserve.

Rauner became a Republican only because it was too late for the Democrats to replace Quinn.

But he will never be one of us.

Quinn won Cook County, the only county he won, but the total vote in the county was down. I suspect that there wasn't a big push by the Rat organization.

You support a Democrat turncoat and won’t question why he got so easily elected in a corrupt state like IL?

Incredible but true. No one in the ILGOP vetted this man. And I’m not cheering. Why should I?

NO TO RINOs!

Knowing he was a closet Democrat, I suspect in reality, the Chicago machine told every one to vote for him.

If he was a conservative, no way would Cook County have let get elected.

It was fixed from the start.

Why do do you have a problem with Rauner coming from an ‘affluent suburb’?

I don’t think we should demonize people because they have been successful?
