Keystone pipeline could be US Republicans’ first blow
http://news.yahoo.com/keystone-pipeline-could-us-republicans-first-step-195133154.html

Newly empowered Republicans keen to strike a symbolic blow against President Barack Obama’s divisive energy policy have an opening salvo: the controversial Keystone pipeline transporting Canadian tar-sands oil to US refineries.

Tuesday’s midterm elections ushered in a new Republican majority in the Senate, and incoming leader Senator Mitch McConnell is believed to have enough votes to overcome blocking tactics by Democrats when he puts forward legislation requiring approval of the $5.3-billion project.

The 1,179-mile (1,897-kilometer) Keystone XL pipeline has been under consideration since Obama took office six years ago, serving as a rallying cry for Republicans — and some Democrats in energy-industry states — desperate to boost US oil and gas production and create jobs.

When the new Congress begins January 3, its Republican leaders will press ahead with energy legislation.

Republicans elected to the Senate this week support Keystone, as do all Republicans currently in the chamber....

The pipeline is an issue because Berkshire Hathaway owns railroads and doesn’t want a pipeline taking away business.

They also own pipelines.

I’ve been a lead engineer on pipeline expansions for them in the past, more than a decade ago.

The best scenario would be to maintain a supply to get oil around 50-65 dollars a barrel and give needed tax breaks to keep rigs in this country fracking and allow our crude on the market along with exspansion of refineries ...then strip the EPA of regulatory authority (without congress’s approval)....get gas at 2.00-2.25 and watch the business and our overall economy flourish....smoke out the illegals..ALL ILLEGALS and DEPORT...no exceptions....then there will be light at the end of the fiscal tunnel ....I just saw a gallon of unleaded 87 octane for 2.99 here in Waterville , Maine....74 more cents and I’m cool for awhile...

OK then why is Berkshire Hathaway against it? BTW I think engineers are majorly cool.

Keep in mind, he doesn’t own THAT pipeline company, but:

I’d vote ‘yes’ on Keystone pipeline: Warren Buffett

The Keystone oil pipeline is good idea for the United States, Warren Buffett said Monday, even though it would take away some business from his Berkshire Hathaway rail subsidiary BNSF.

The railroad actually has a very big problem. They the capacity to meet the needs of their customers. The pipe line will mitigate that problem.

Berkshire Hathaway is not the real stumbling block. The real problem is the great mass of moonbat wackos that took on the pipeline as a cause celebre and cannot let it go.

Actually, the pipeline will carry very little Bakken oil and doesn't even enter North Dakota. They mostly serve separate markets.

Yes but doesn’t the north south trackage along the Mississippi carry Canadian oil in their own tankers?

Probably some. But once oil is put on trains, there are markets outside the gulf coast that are paying more money due to much of the supply is from overseas, East Coast and now West Coast as well.

It would take some demand off the railroads in general. But railroads are not keeping up with the traffic they have today and the Bakken production is expected to continue to grow even at the lower price today.

I think the Canadians are poking a stick at our dear leader.

The Energy East pipeline will be in the ground before Keystone starts the first spread.

I thought Canada decided to cancel the Keystone pipeline and instead were going to pipe the oil to their coast and ship it to the US and elsewhere.

No.

Keystone XL is still planned.

Approved is Enbridge’s Northern Gateway Pipelines, twin pipeline from Bruderheim, Alberta, to Kitimat, British Columbia. The eastbound pipeline would import natural gas condensate and the westbound pipeline would export diluted bitumen.

The existing Kinder Morgans’s Trans Mountain pipeline to Vancouver is going to be expanded to carry more oil west.

TransCanada Energy East Pipeline is seeking approval.

These projects are not either/or. They likely will all eventually be built.
