The Media Really, Really Wasn’t Expecting A Sam Brownback Victory in Kansas
Daily Caller ^ | 11/5/2014 | TRISTYN BLOOM

The Kansas governor’s race was a nailbiter all night, with Republican incumbent Sam Brownback neck and neck with his Democrat challenger Paul Davis right up until Davis conceded around midnight EST. Looking at recent media coverage leading up to the election, though, you never would’ve known that #KSgov was a race to watch, especially since so many talking heads heralded it as a referendum on conservative policies.

Left and right wing outlets began writing Brownback off for his aggressive tax policies weeks and even months ago, with many calling his predicted loss a mandate for moderation. With 100% of precincts reporting and Brownback having taken 49.96% of the vote compared to Davis’s 46.06% — with a higher Kansas voter turnout than in 2010 — let’s track the evolution of the narrative.

Why Are a Conservative Governor and Conservative Senate Candidate Struggling in Kansas? Dave Weigel, Slate, 3/14/14.

“In 2013 Gov. Sam Brownback had the votes to dramatically slash income tax rates, while keeping sales taxes above 6 percent. How’s it working? Well, unusually for a governor who’s returning money to taxpayers, Brownback has become terribly unpopular.”

A ‘Cautionary Tale’ In Brownback’s Failed Kansas Experiment. Steve Benen, MSNBC, 7/1/14.

“Brownback remains convinced, right now, that his policies were the right call, just as Darrell Issa believes there’s still an IRS scandal, John McCain believes war in Iraq is a great idea, and the entirety of the Republican Party believes the ACA is failing and the Benghazi conspiracy theories are true. Brownback is up for re-election. One recent poll showed a competitive race.”

He has saved me thousands of dollars and I love the judges he’s appointed.

Voted down the tax hike in Wichita too. Wasn’t even close.

Brownback won 50% to 46%. The GOP now has an 80% majority in the state house.

It was such a pleasure to watch the liberal pukes in the media announce the results. You could see their surprise and disappointment. They had been working so hard to get their Dem candidate elected.

I was also delighted to see the phony "Independent" Greg Orman go down to a crushing 53% to 42% defeat in the Senate race. Wasn't even close.

When all is considered, “social” conservative issues MUST come before fiscal. Fiscal policy - taxes, spending, etc. - can be instantly fixed and reversed. Marriage redefinition not so much. You can’t UNabort a baby.

Republican Governors (PA) raise taxes -- they lose.

Republican Governors (Kansas) cut taxes -- they win.

There's a lesson there.

Do you think Orman’s comments about Clowns, and Clowns cars
and Biden’s comments on Monday that “Orman is one of us.”
made the difference and people switched from him to Roberts as a result of those statements?

The media was fit to be tied that Brownback had the audacity to cut taxes and to set the state on the road to eliminating the income tax at the state level. They have been sputtering and fuming ever since and went all in working to champion his defeat. It seems that Kansas voters do not share the media’s views.

Flags at union headquarters and media outlets around the state are at half staff and everyone is in deep mourning.

Barry the Boob probably busted Drunken Joe Biden in the ribs with an elbow this morning, saying, “Way to go, Joe...you really screwed the pooch this time. You killed our guy’s chances in Kansas with your flapping gums. Don’t you ever bother to think before you say something?”

People in general HATE politicians who are hiding something. That smacks of DECEPTION and FAKERY.

If you’re not going to tell people who you voted for in 2012 ( I’m looking at you Kay Hagen of North Carolina ) or which party you will caucus with ( yep, that’s Mr. Orman ), the voters are going to smell a faker.

The fact that Joe Biden “outed” the man was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

MORAL: BE HONEST AND DEFEND YOUR PRINCIPLES. If you can’t defend them and argue cogently for them, then admit that the principles you hold are wrong.

Well I suspect Joe’s comments finally have taken him out as a serious contender for the Demorat nomination for President in 2016.

That is an excellent observation on your part.
Be honest and defend your principles was a hallmark of liberals in previous times. I am thinking of Hubert Humphrey in particular.

Many conservatives are in the same boat as a bunch of liberals. They are sitting there waiting for the free check. I know good folks, who are conservatives, who say, “well if those bums are going to sit on their arses and get free money and phones, etc., then I want mine also.” A lot of people are falling for the liberal crap that the rich owes everyone something, that the government will take care of all your debts, etc. I heard people at the polls yesterday whining about not getting what the dims are giving the illegals, etc. They want their share. I don’t view a conservative to be that type of person, but some are apparently starting to go down that road. Sad commentary of our nation, and the people in it. The schools are dumbing them down, they are falling for the liberal crap that the government will provide for you after they fleece those horrible rich people.

Corbett’s loss was not related to raising taxes, he was in over his head, let his opponents define him and never ever got on message.

His opponent is on the record stating he wants to raise taxes, and he won.

If raising taxes were the problem, we wouldn’t have Gov. Elect Wolf.

I think the biggest thing that hurt Orman was that Roberts successfully (and accurately) painted him as a liberal who would side with Obama. That was the kiss of death, IMHO.

Biden's proclamation that Orman would side with the Democrats was an affirmation of what many people already suspected. By that time, Orman's doom had already been sealed.

You are probably right, but implying that Bob Dole is a clown and Biden’s remarks probably cost him votes.

I was really encouraged when Roberts got guys from the GOPe (Jeb Bush, Romney, Dole, Rick Perry) and Tea Party types (Cruz, Palin) to come to Kansas to campaign for him. I think it helped unify the GOP behind Roberts.

And of course, calling 91-year-old WWII veteran Bob Dole a clown had to have hurt Orman. Though some disdain Dole as a compromiser politician, he is widely respected throughout Kansas (and I suspect a lot of other places too).
