Republicans take control of US Senate, increase their House majority for Obama's final 2 years

WASHINGTON — Riding a powerful wave of voter discontent, resurgent Republicans captured control of the Senate and tightened their grip on the House Tuesday night in elections certain to complicate President Barack Obama's final two years in office.
Republican Mitch McConnell led the way to a new Senate majority, dispatching Democratic challenger Alison Lundergan Grimes in Kentucky after a $78 million campaign of unrelieved negativity. Voters are "hungry for new leadership. They want a reason to be hopeful," said the man now in line to become majority leader and set the Senate agenda.
Two-term incumbent Mark Pryor of Arkansas was the first Democrat to fall, defeated by freshman Rep. Tom Cotton. Sen. Mark Udall of Colorado was next, defeated by Rep. Cory Gardner. Sen. Kay Hagan also lost, in North Carolina, to Thom Tillis, the speaker of the state House.
Republicans also picked up seats in Iowa, West Virginia, South Dakota and Montana, all states where Democrats retired. They had needed a net gain of six seats to end a Democratic majority in place since 2006.
In the House, with dozens of races uncalled, Republicans had picked up 11 seats that had been in Democratic hands, and given up only one.
A net pickup of 13 would give them more seats in the House than at any time since 1946

Does anybody know why they haven’t called Alaska for Sullivan yet, according to the Alaska Secretary of State website, (soaelections.gci.net/data/results.htm) 100% of precincts have been counted and Sullivan is up a comfortable 2.5% over Begich?

Does McConnell automatically get Majority Leader status, or does the Senate have to elect their leader?

How much of a window does he have before the new senators take their places? If it is more than a day we will likely see all the current vacant judgeships filled in a flurry.
There are votes outstanding from the bush and Anchorage where Begich is strong.
I called it for Sullivan several hours ago. The networks want to play it safe.
That said, it looks like a definite GOP pickup.
No that Hopalong Harry Reid is going to have a smaller office, I wonder where he’s going to keep all of his cows.

President Obama has answered Democrats’ calls for a federal judiciary that looks more like America. As of April he had named more black, Hispanic, Asian, and openly gay judges, as well as more women, than any of his predecessors. And after a slow start in making judicial nominations and years of Republican obstruction, he surpassed the number of federal judges George W. Bush had appointed at the same point in his presidency—thanks in part to a rule Senate Democrats pushed through last year that ended use of the filibuster to block nominees. Obama has filled 238 federal court seats, and Democratic appointees now make up the majority of active-status jurists on 9 of the 13 U.S. appeals courts, vs. one when he took office.
Yet some Democratic activists, while praising the president’s diversity efforts, have a new complaint: His picks for the federal bench aren’t liberal enough. These critics are encouraging the president to appoint nominees who will tilt the ideological balance of the federal bench to the left—offsetting the hundreds of young, conservative judges Bush picked over eight years.

The new Senate will be sworn in the first week of January. Obama and Reid have less than two months to force through nominees.

The Democrats can still convene a lame duck session between now and Christmas.
I’m not a Beck fan anymore, but was dropping kids off and switched to the start of the show to see what was said. Pat was singing his version of “Happy Days Are Here Again” and my son and I doubled over laughing.
The next shoe to drop will be the resignattions of White House staffers.
They are saying there are 24,000 early and absentee ballots to count on Nov 11, plus 14,000 other requested absentee ballots if they are returned within the next two weeks. An 8,100 vote lead could disappear quickly.
Mark Warner has the cash to find some uncounted ballot boxes so he will stay in office. Too bad, Gillespie got close.
Thats a good start but we also need to be rid of the RINOs too.
