The mayor's office of the city of Houston in Texas confirmed Thursday that conservatives sent in more than 1,000 Bibles to the city's first openly gay mayor, Annise Parker, in protest after the sermons of five local pastors were subpoenaed in a legal dispute over a controversial ordinance some say will allow men to use women's restrooms in the city.
Earlier reports noted that city officials in Houston were upset over a voter lawsuit filed after the Houston City Council rejected valid petitions to repeal the city's controversial Equal Rights Ordinance, which allows men who identify as female to use women's restrooms, and women who identify as male to use men's restrooms.
When Parker announced Wednesday that she has asked her legal department to withdraw the subpoenas, hundreds of Bibles had already been sent to her office.
Conservatives and pastors were encouraged by former GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee to send her Bibles and copies of their sermons in protest of what the city's lawyers did to the pastors who are not party to the voter lawsuit.
"We have about 1,000 (Bibles) maybe a little more than 1,000," explained Darian Ward, press secretary for the mayor's office, told The Christian Post Thursday. She said she was not sure how many, if any, were sent in on Thursday or the day before, but explained that they plan on donating the Bibles to people who need them.
When asked how the mayor's office felt about the Bibles, she said: "Well, it's a good thing because we have them to donate to organizations that need them."

She has given the bibles to the police department to distribute according to the radio this morning.
The police department...
Wow. So she has no connection to a church or another public organization that could give them out. Good to know.
Of course, the Mayor and her staff don't think that SHE needs one . . . they never do.
so.. the police are going to distribute Bibles?
I am glad to hear that.
The Bible is certainly the 'Lamp before our feet, and a Light before our path' -- but sending 1000 Bibles to her is quite a waste. There are people throughout the world who are starving for the Word. Send it to them.
And I am sure that the Mayor already has a copy of the Bible. Just gathering dust somewhere.
That was how I understood it. I haven’t found a source in writing.
RE: so.. the police are going to distribute Bibles?
More like the Gideons...

I can identify a bunch of people who really need the Bibles - they are at City Hall.

The police department is already busy, Madame Mayor.
Maybe your "wife" can help with the Bible distribution./s
Parker is a snooty lard-ass who sees nothing wrong with burdening the police with her social agendas.
If the police distribute the Bibles, will the ACLU step in and cry “separation of church and state”?
Ditto.
Nope, no bias there.

Great point!
I guarantee you that it won't be the Koran.
“sent in more than 1,000 Bibles to the city’s first openly gay mayor, Annise Parker, in protest”
it wasn’t in protest, the mayor subpoenaed copies of sermons, and that’s the master list.
A phone book is usually better for interrogation purposes, but I guess an oversize Bible would do.
(Joking)
Actually , that was the proper choice, given her position.
Had she given them to any private organization or church, there would be endless bickering over her WHO she gave them to. Even if it was her own church. Her donation to a church or private org. would be questioned as misuse of funds from the State. It would turn into a quagmire.
Yes. They 'distribute' stuffed toys to little children as well.
Besides domestic violence cases, there are other types of incidents where the donation of Bibles are applicable.
The PROBLEM with this whole thing is that SOON, the police will be banned from giving out Bibles.
No. It will be CAIR and they will claim it offends Muslims and our Muslim supporting President.
