A massive fire has broken out at the Radio France headquarters building in Paris, causing the evacuation of personnel, according to reports.

The fire engulfed the seventh and eight floors of Maison de la radio (Radio House) in the 16 arrondissement of Paris. Several windows exploded due to the extreme heat. Firefighters were called to the scene.

Radio programmes of France Inter and France Info were suspended as a necessary safety measure. The fire reportedly hit the area of a ventilation system under works.

No injuries were immediately reported.

"I hope we can resume our radio programmes as soon as possible," Laurent Guimier, director of France Info, told AFP.

The Union must first schedule a meeting with all the members to discuss the possible change in working conditions before we vote on it.

That could be a pretty idea for a sketch comedy show

“Hello, WKRP.

No, sir, we are off the air.

Now, HOW can we make an announcement that we’re off the air?”

Get Eddie Shoestring on the investigation. A British DJ/PI will sort it out every time.

“Typical of a socialist country that it would invest so much in a dated technology.”

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

That picture (very nice of you to post, btw) tells me there is probably more than just radio involved. But you may be right - perhaps Radio France is like our NPR on steroids.

OK, where were the welders? I always ask that question when a fire breaks out at construction. Because, I am a welder.

I wonder was there a natural gas line anywhere close to the construction. If that line was not clear of any natural gas even after the gas supply was shut off, one wrong move by a welder and—well, you get the idea.

If this had happened in August, they all would have been on vacation and the place would have burned to the ground.

Many very nice homes under construction in the U.S. have burned because some plumber was careless with a torch while soldering copper water pipes. Then there are the commercial building roof fires during application of the hot tar and gravel.

As for investment in obsolete technology many millions of people still listen to radio broadcasts. One can embrace new tech without tossing the old tech that is still useful.Buggy whip companies may be few but shoemakers are still in business after 6,000 years.

Radio, while “dated”, has its uses. It is still the thing for people who can’t afford to stream audio. It is important in remote areas. Radio can be jammed but it cannot be blocked, like anything on the Internet can be blocked. Most broadcasters, from Radio France to some of your local radio stations, make their programming available both on the air and streaming via the Internet.

Over the air radio and TV are the only media that one can listen to or watch without a corporation or government creating a dossier on your media habits. Everything you do on cable or internet or smart phone is logged by someone as a means to profit or worm their way into your psyche.
