LANSING, MI There are 10 individuals in Michigan who are being monitored for potential Ebola exposure, according to the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH).
Were working with the local health departments to monitor, its actually 10 individuals now who are at low risk of Ebola right now, said MDCH spokesperson Jennifer Smith.
Low risk means that these people have no known exposure to Ebola, no symptoms and are in generally good health. What makes them a risk at all is they have traveled to regions of Africa where the virus exists.
Ebola is a virus that presents with flu-like symptoms, is spread through contact with body fluids and has affected the African countries of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 94 percent of passengers from those countries come into five airports: Washington-Dulles, Newark, JFK international Airport in New York, Chicago-OHare and Atlanta.
While none of those airports are located in Michigan, some people who have come from the West African region on flights through those airports are now in Michigan.
These are individuals that we became aware of through the screening process at the airports, Smith said.
Under recently updated CDC guidelines released Monday, state and local health departments are advised to actively or directly monitor potential Ebola exposure, rather than having people monitor themselves.
Smith said the 10 individuals are contacted twice daily to monitor for symptoms, but their movement is not restricted. They are monitored for 21 days past their potential for exposure. Ebolas incubation period is between two and 21 days.
The MDCH is not releasing information on where in Michigan the monitoring is occurring.
There isnt a new or increased risk to the general public at this time, and for privacy reasons we are not disclosing the specific locations, Smith said.
Kent County officials on Oct. 24 disclosed the monitoring of one person. Oakland County on Oct. 17 said one individual was self-monitoring.
There are no cases being monitored in Ingham County, Health Officer Linda Vail said.
The state and local health departments are following CDC standards in this monitoring, Smith said.
All the more reason to have a travel ban to west Africa..... IF you decide to go you cannot come back until quarantined and declared ebola free. If you are there and not a US citizen don’t bother you can’t come.
We used to quarantine people routinely who came to this country to be sure they were disease free (what in the heck do you think Ellis Island was used for?)
Takes ones breath away...... .....:
This is mind boggling!!! Dont you think its about time Pee Wee developed a PLAN??? This is a time for LEADERSHIP, not his constant waffling. Is it time to panic? Of course not. The time to panic is when it is too late to develop a consistent plan of action. What is the incubation time for STUPIDITY?
Lewiston Idaho veterinarians Letter to the Editor re: Ebola, Nails it!
The present Ebola crisis in the world is frightening.
I have submitted the following letter to the editor of the Lewiston Morning Tribune:
Editor, Lewiston Morning Tribune:
If I wish to import a horse into the United States from Liberia or any African country other than Morocco, the horse needs to undergo a 60 day quarantine period at a USDA approved quarantine facility prior to mingling with the general population of horses in this country. Africa has a disease called African Horse Sickness that does not exist in the US; this is the way we have kept it out of this country.
African Horse Sickness does not cause disease in people, only horses; our government has determined that it would be devastating to the US horse industry if it were to come here.
The United States (and virtually all other countries) require a myriad of tests and often quarantine prior to bringing in a foreign animal.
I cant legally cross state lines in the United States with a horse or cow without a health certificate signed by a USDA accredited veterinarian stating that the animal has been inspected and found free of infectious disease. In most cases blood tests are also required. In fact I cant legally cross the Snake River and ride my horse in Idaho without a health certificate and a negative blood test for Equine Infectious Anemia.
Im not complaining; the United States of America, the States of Idaho and Washington as well as the other 48 states take the health of our livestock very seriously, and we have a very good record at keeping foreign animal diseases out of our country. I am happy to do my part to maintain biosecurity in our animal population.
If I am a resident of Liberia incubating Ebola, to enter the United States all I need to do is present a valid visa, and lie when asked if I have been exposed to Ebola. Within hours (no quarantine required) I can be walking the streets of any city in the United States.
I feel very fortunate to live in a country that values our animals so highly.

Except for 5% of the 1400 patients studied.
This isn't a Scientific fact (21 days max), just a Political Science statistic.
(Since all records of obama's past were lost in a tragic boating accident and fire, no one can be certain that the guy in the red circle isn't him...)
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
I instinctively know there is a massive cover up of many cases before the election. If that Maine nurse kills someone with her ebola— She must be charged with capital murder!! She is a bitch from hell in my opinion!! STOP THE FLIGHTS!!!!!
The number of people being monitored will steadily rise, although no one will actually be infected — until Weds Nov 5. On that day, the US will have infected people in the double digits.
Well done on the graphical data find!
I looked for a can of powdered eggs at a Walmart on the Rockies today while getting monthly groceries and a few extra food items for the spraying ice just ahead (piles high and closes the roads here during most winters). Most of the dried stuff in large cans was out of stock, but a few other products were good enough. I reckon some folks are freaking out on Ebola.
Got some stuff needed to take pictures and will find free Web space for winter photos, BTW. :-)
The article sites MDCH spokesperson saying “and for privacy reasons we are not telling the locations” (of the people exposed the Ebola). What! People surely would like to know if their community is involved.
In Connecticut we still can find out what town the Ebola people are living in and that is good as people have chosen not to send their children to school. What is this privacy reason thing in Michigan?
Is this the new way to deal with the Ebola thing- privacy rights? Just not good.
I got ten bucks that says NONE of them have it.
takers?
Sometimes the draconian decisions that must be made are sadly necessary. I read of the entries of persons and their accounts at Ellis Island. Tuberculosis would, if detected send a person back to their own country.
One account had a man being told prior to landing that he must not cough. He had TB. He could not stop the coughing and dived out of the ship and was apprehended. He was making for shore. Sad though it is, one could imagine such a person boarding with a hard working family. The poor kids could then be smitten with this dread disease. His entry would have made America all the worse.
Some authorities have to make awesome decisions and then get vilified and it is not fair. (Excuse the rant).
Further symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, external and internal bleeding, losing skin and serious pain.
Who the hell edits this stuff?
I am guessing that there are many people being monitored...I suspect as the rumors go that obola patients have gone “missing”.....
this obola stuff has got TPTB scared.....even with just two confirmed cases in America.....besides the traveler Duncan...at the hospital info on obola class our CEO said she had never seen such preparation and effort go into anything like this before...they must be worried....or maybe hiding something...
I believe none of this crap. The experts either don't know anything at all, or else they are lying. Both of these possibilities are very worrisome.
Why would TPTB be worried about a contagion they’re complicit in spreading? You don’t think this is intentional?
Beaumont health system/ royal oak.
