The U.S. Supreme Court late Tuesday halted the execution of a Missouri man who killed a woman and her two children, citing concerns that his legal counsel was ineffective.

Mark Christeson, 35, was scheduled to die by injection at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday at the state prison in Bonne Terre before the late stay of execution was issued.

Christeson was put on death row for the January 1998 murders of Susan Brouk, 36, her daughter, Adrian, 12, and her son, Kyle, 9. He was 18 at the time of the crimes. His cousin Jessie Carter, then 17, was also implicated in the murders but was spared the death sentence after he agreed to give evidence for the prosecution against his relative.

IT TOOK 17 YEARS TO FIGURE THIS OUT???

As per usual, justice is put off because of a technicality. Probably an intentional one, too. How does a lawyer not file for an appeal if it’s usual to do so?

17 years in this case.

Timothy McVeigh was apprehended, tried and executed for the Oklahoma City bombing with about 6 years of the crime demonstrating the government can move the process along without Supreme Court interference when it wishes.

The death penalty, as applied in the US today, has little deterrence impact. First it is unevenly applied since it is not used in all states, is arbitrarily plea bargained away, is often arbitrarily set aside by appeals courts, and it takes so long to impose even when the most heinous crimes are committed.

It is interesting the Supremes are delaying an execution ordered through exhaustive due process in the court system once again. Meanwhile they acquiesce to a POTUS who claims the right to execute American citizens without formal charges, trial, or any kind of legal due process.

The US legal system is completely corrupted. There is no “equal justice under law” in 21st century America where the law is interpreted, not enforced. It is long past time to remove the “equal justice under law” inscription from the Supreme Court building.

I'm surprised it wasn't much faster.

There were a lot of people who didn't sleep easy until McVeigh 's lips were permanently sealed.

this one is actually legit...

the guys lawyers were so bad they filed the appeal over 100 days past the deadline, so he got no appeal..

he is the only guy on death row in the US that has not had an appeal...

there is talk of disbarring the lawyers, they were that bad..

the guy may be scum, but we are all entitled to a fair trial and competent representation..

McVey refused any appeals which sped the process along.

In other news, the Supreme Court also stayed the executor of Ferguson Missouri resident Michael Brown.

The court sent its Bailiff to the “gates of hell” to serve the writ of habeas corpus.

Perhaps the lawyer didn’t file an appeal because it is nonsense. The scum murdered a woman and her children. He’s guilty. I’m humane enough to want that evil murderer put out of his misery (and ours) as soon as possible. Only those who like political games would bother with an appeal that is destined to fail.

“McVey refused any appeals which sped the process along.”

McVeigh actually filed several appeals including one for certiorari to the US Supreme Court. The certiorari appeal was denied by the Supreme Court on March 8, 1999. After this rejection he dropped all other appeals.

By excusing this, SCOTUS is therefore an accessory to the murders.

This republic is lost. When does one or more states break loose, and start another one?
